listen_now2The episode began with Elena hallucinating Connor, and thinking he was a ghost, so she called Jeremy to help. Connor continues to wind him up, so Elena stabs him in the neck. Unfortunately, it turns out that it’s Jeremy. Luckily, he’s wearing his ring, and wakes up later. Elena continues to hallucinate, and Klaus shows up and takes her away for her safety. He tells her that he had the hallucinations for years, and they just stopped. Caroline and Tyler fake a break-up in front of Klaus to distract him from what Tyler and Hayley are doing, and later she goes to the Grill to try to get him to release her, which he doesn’t, but she does stay for a drink.

Tyler convinces a hybrid friend to help get Elena out and Stefan in, which happens, but not before Elena goes mad and attacks him before fleeing. She’s already hallucinated Connor outright wanting to kill her, and then the returning Katherine (though it is just a hallucination) winding her up about Stefan and Damon, but when she makes it to Wickery Bridge she hallucinates her mother, who convinces her to kill herself by throwing her daylight ring into the river and waiting for the sun to come up. It’s Damon that convinces her to hold on, and the curse is lifted when Klaus allows Jeremy to kill the hybrid that helped Stefan. The curse is only broken when a potential becomes a hunter, and as Jeremy kills the hybrid, his tattoo grows. Elena is free of the curse, and Damon takes her home and returns her daylight ring, which he went swimming to find.

Caroline and Tyler argue about his friend dying, and this is only increased when she says Klaus only agreed when she agreed to go on a date with him. Meanwhile, Professor Shane is just as sinister as before, and Matt learns that he was the one Pastor Young was calling, and may be the reason for the explosion, so he tells Damon. Shane himself tells Bonnie that when the new hunter has a complete tattoo, to come to him as he’s the only one that will help (he previously told a story about a powerful witch who lost his power, but remains immortal – could this be the big evil of the season, and is it Shane?). The episode ends with Elena and Stefan having a heart to heart about how they feel, and ends with the pair seemingly breaking up.

It was another strong episode, and the season is really starting to build momentum. The development to Jeremy character is going to be one of the more intriguing aspects of the season, and I’m looking forward to seeing where they go with it. The references to the ghosts are still nice to see, particularly the tributes to Ric, and I’m glad that we had Katherine back (if only for a hallucination – hopefully she’ll be back in reality soon). I can’t wait for the next episode.
