In a recent discussion with some of the writers and the director of the latest Justice
League animated feature War World, I was able to delve into the creative process behind the
latest entry in the franchise. Many of the people involved in the production either came into the
project either as fans or as previously having been involved in the DC universe, cultivating an air
of care and enjoyment throughout the entire process. The director of the film spoke to the
collaboration between the different sectors, ranging from the actors to the writers, to ensure that
the film had a cohesive tone. Each other the writers took point on one of the heroes featured in
the film–Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman–allowing them to all play to their artistic
strengths and create for beloved characters.
Jeremy Adams, who was responsible for the scenes involving Batman, spoke about the
collaborative nature of coming up with the story, and how because he embarked on this project
with people he was already familiar with, they already had a sense of the storylines he would like
to take and the genres he would like to explore. He spoke about the joy of making a living doing
something that he was bullied for as a child. The love these creators have for these characters
shines through in the depth of the knowledge they draw upon and the genuine joy they have in
being able to make a living crafting these stories. As comic book properties continue to expand
as an industry, these fan-creators bring a necessary passion to what has become an incredibly
profitable industry.
