Until recently, my only knowledge of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) was what I’d experienced in Las Vegas nightclubs. As someone with a strong appreciation for all genres of music, I’m always interested in the journey that had to take place in order to eventually get great music out into the public sphere.  That is why I’m thrilled to have watched, What We Started, a new documentary about EDM, directed by Bert Marcus and Cyrus Said.

I found the film to be groundbreaking, as it shattered my personal preconceptions about the genre, by taking fans behind the scenes and back in time for a never before seen look at how EDM music became what it is today. From its early origins during the 80’s and 90’s club culture surge, to its mainstream integration into today’s Top 40 charts, the film takes viewers on a journey to fully understand the blood, sweat and tears that went into evolving the genre into what it is today.

The narrative structure of What We Started also sets it apart.  The film focuses primarily on the contrasting upbringings and career paths of two unlikely co-stars, veteran DJ Carl Cox, and rising star Martin Garrix. Cox (54), who grew up in Barbados, forged his path in spite of a family who didn’t understand or support what he was pursuing. Garrix (21) was discovered at age 16 with a family who helped him every step of the way. Both men have been instrumental to the popularity of EDM, and clearly will continue to be for a long time to come. Interviews with Cox and Garrix’s friends and family shed light on both of their experiences, and help viewers get to know these two EDM legends on a much more personal level.

Like Marcus’ past acclaimed films that meaningfully include preeminent talent, like Champs, How to Make Money Selling Drugs and Teenage Paparazzo, the film features excerpts from a star-studded group of celebrity commentators, including David Guetta, Ed Sheeran, Usher, Moby, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto and many more. What We Started stands out as a film created to celebrate the robust culture, history, and diversity of the EDM genre, as well as entertain and dazzle with it’s sharp cinematography. Fans and non-fans of the genre alike are sure to leave this film with a new appreciation of Electronic Dance Music.

What We Started will be available for audiences to see in early 2018.  Release date is currently forthcoming.
