On this weeks episode of Once Upon a Time, got a little spooky. The Wicked Witch had some tricks up her sleeve and our heroes got one step closer to discovering her identity in Storybrooke.
The episode hit the ground running with a very upsetting dream sequence. Charming finds himself in Emma’s nursery back in the Enchanted forest. There he finds Emma who is dressed in a gown for her first ball. She asks Charming to teach her to dance because she is nervous and never learned. He tells her that this is all he ever wanted for her, and she tells him it is too bad she never got it. She then gets stripped away from him into the wardrobe before Charming wakes up in bed at the castle. When he wakes Snow shares some good news with him, she is pregnant. You can’t help but notice the weary look in Charming’s eyes when he finds out. This comes into play a lot in this episode.
Back in Storybrooke Emma, Hook, Regina and the Charmings discuss their plan of action. Emma suggests that they start by looking in Regina’s office for any physical evidence the Wicked Witch could have left behind. Hook, Emma, and David head to the Mayor’s office to look for clues. Zelena still has Rumple locked up in his cage, however she brought him something to play with. Rumple is frantically spinning straw to try to spin away the madness. What has Zelena done to our poor Rumple to make him like this? She reveals that she possesses the dagger. Now we know how Rumple ended up her prisoner. She uses giving Rumple a shave as a ruse to get his blood so she can steal something from the safe in his shop.
At Regina’s office David finds traces of holly berry, something he knows grows in the woods. Right before they can set off David gets a call that Mary Margaret needs him to come home to meet their new midwife. Hook seems pretty happy that he gets to be alone with Emma (don’t worry Hook this girl is happy for you too). In the Enchanted Forest that was, Charming seems to have picked up his mate Hook’s knack for drinking. Robin finds him in the stables and tells him that he looks like he is troubled. Charming explains that he has had this lingering dread since he returned to the Enchanted Forest. Robin tells him of a magical root that helps you over come all of your fears. Charming, always up for an adventure, immediately leaves to seek it out. Robin warns him that he has heard that part of the forest is haunted.
When David makes it back to the loft he finds Mary Margaret and Zelena becoming fast friends. It is clear that David is uneasy about the whole situation. When Zelena offers to make them tea she manages to slip whatever it is that she stole from Mr. Gold’s shop in David’s cup.
We finally get our introduction to Rapunzel when Charming finds the night root growing right near her tower. He hears her calling for help and climbs up to investigate. Rapunzel tells Charming that he is the first person she has seen a long time. He see the tiara she is wearing and asks if she is a princess. She tells him that she left her kingdom to find the night root because she was afraid she wouldn’t be a good leader. Her brother was first in line but he died tragically. She found the night root but it didn’t work on her. Before she could return a witch appeared and trapped her in the tower. Every time Rapunzel tries to leave the tower the witch appears.
At the loft Zelena picks up on David’s weariness. She also notices how David hasn’t touched his tea. She finally gets him to drink it by offering up a toast. After he drinks the tea Zelena suggests that he return to whatever town business she pulled him away from. Henry and Regina take a stroll while he enjoys some ice cream. He explains to Regina that there is something up with his mom because she has never pulled him out of school for anything. He says that he thinks it is because of what happened with Walsh. Henry expresses to Regina that he was excited over the prospect of finally having more places at the table for holidays to which Regina replies that she bets one day he’ll have more family than he knows what to do with. Oh Henry, if only you knew what your real family tree looked like.
In the forest Hook and Emma are hot on the holly berry trail. Hook jokes that he always finds himself roaming through the forest on some adventure with her. She asks him upfront what he was really doing during that year they spent apart, because she knows he’s lying about his supposed swashbuckling adventures. Hook tells her that is his story and he’s sticking to it. He says that she can just thank him for saving her from a loveless marriage with a flying monkey. Emma tells him how it broke her heart to find out Walsh wasn’t who she thought he was because she was in love with him. Hook tells her that he is happy to hear that because if her heart can break that means it still works. The chemistry between these two in this scene was insane. Anyone else get the feeling that Hook might be this story’s representation of the Tin Man? They follow the path out of the woods and find a farmhouse, which Emma appreciates the irony of.
David has found the trail but notices that he is being followed. He thinks it is the Wicked Witch and prepares to face her. Emma and Hook search around the farmhouse. They find a locked storm cellar, and Hook expresses that they should be careful because they have no idea what the witch is keeping captive down there. Emma teases that he is scared but says she’ll call Regina for magical backup. She notices that she has a message from David and they go back to find him. The hooded figure attacks David and when he stabs it with his sword he sees that the person under the hood is himself. Both David, in the present, and Rapunzel, in the missing year, have to fight off the incarnation of their deepest fears to overcome them. They both aren’t able to until they come to terms with what they are afraid of. Rapunzel is afraid that she can’t be a good leader. David is afraid that he is going to be a bad father. When Rapunzel finally gets out of the tower Charming returns with her to the castle where her parents are waiting for her.
When Emma, Hook, and Regina find him they see that he has just fought off something. David explains how he had to fight off his fears. Regina asks what happened to the weapon he used and he tells her that it disappeared. Regina realizes that David’s courage transferred into his sword and that the Witch can use its power. Does this mean that David is the Cowardly Lion? When they find the storm cellar they realize just whom she has been keeping there. Rumple is nowhere to be found but his spinning wheel is still there along with straw. Okay so straw and Rumple is losing his mind? I’d say that qualifies him to be our Scarecrow, which would make Emma the most likely candidate for Dorothy. Putting together all the pieces of this Oz puzzle is so much fun.
