This week on Once Upon a Time we got to see more of the new bad girl in town. Zelena, or as we know her the Wicked Witch of the West, makes her first appearance in Storybrooke with a pretty good cover story. So here’s what we learned this week about the year without Emma, and just what is going on with this new curse.
In the Enchanted forest we see Zelena playing dress up with Regina’s things. It appears that her skin isn’t the only thing she’s green with. We also got a short moment between Ruby and Snow, hooray for Meghan Ory being back! Regina’s motherly instincts kick in when a flying monkey was headed straight for little Roland. Regina solved the problem by poofing the scary creature into a cute stuffed toy monkey for Roland. SO. CUTE. As if I needed another reason to get on board with Robin and Regina as a couple.
In Storybrooke Emma and Hook have a little powwow with her parents to see if they can fill in any of the blanks the curse left. Hook says that he received word about the new curse via a message brought by a bird. He believed Snow was the one who sent it, since communicating via aviary creatures is her forte. Grumpy and Happy come to inform the gang that people have been disappearing. At Granny’s Mary Margaret tells Henry she and his mother were cellmates in Phoenix, in an attempt to make up for acting too familiar around him, and that she was in for ‘banditry’… nice save there. However, Regina’s heart shatters, just like the glass she drops, when she sees Henry sitting there in the diner.
Thanks to Robin Hood and his Merry Men we find out that flying monkeys are abducting people that approach the town line. This prompts a hilarious conversation between Hook, Charming, and Emma. Emma notes that the creature Robin Hood describes sounds a lot like what attacked her in New York, to which Hook points out that she almost married that monster. Safe to say Daddy Charming was a bit shocked to find out his little girl almost got married without him. Emma rallies the town to try to get some answers and of course everyone is quick to point the finger at Regina. Turns out that was Emma’s plan along, and Regina was in on it. Now they have the ability to search for whoever really cast the curse. Regina hopes to replicate the memory potion so they can get some answers.
Back in the Enchanted Forest we got more of the show’s newest potential romance when Robin Hood shows up to insist that he assist Regina in infiltrating the castle. He thanks her for protecting Roland and Regina is pleasantly surprised that a thief could have honor. We find out that the Wicked Witch is powerful enough to break the blood magic Regina used to seal Cora’s crypt. Robin, like any good soul mate, is able to read Regina pretty well. He can tell that Regina has lost a child and tells her that she has the touch of a mother. However Regina managed to fool us, the real reason she needed to go in to the castle was so she could get the ingredients she needed to put herself under a sleeping curse. She says that Henry is the only one who could wake her and she would only want to wake up if he was back in her life. This is some heart breaking stuff Regina is going through.
At Granny’s Mary Margaret is obsessing over baby details while hanging out with Henry. Our not so green skinned anymore friend is enjoying a cup of coffee near by. She tells Mary Margaret that she is a midwife and offers to help her with her baby…hmm that’s just a bit too fishy to me. Does this new baby play some part in the Wicked Witch’s evil plan? Out in the forest Once’s reigning bromance gets a new edition when Charming and Hook team up with Robin go to search for the people who have gone missing. When Regina fails to replicate the memory potion Emma pulls out an idea from her bail bondsperson bag of tricks. If they make everyone believe Regina was successful in making the potion the person responsible will reveal themself by trying to stop her. Emma was right, because once Leroy spreads the news at Granny’s Zelena books it. The boys discover that there’s another small problem, not only are the people that go missing getting attacked by flying monkeys…. they’re getting turned into the creatures too. Things are getting complicated in Storybrooke.
Emma and Regina get some Team Mom bonding time while having a stake out outside Reigna’s office. Emma says she came back because Henry would tell her that a hero would come back. Regina sealed her office with blood magic, but just like before Zelena is able to break it and she escapes before they can see her face. I hope we see more of Emma and Regina working together in the future.
Before Regina can put herself to sleep the Wicked Witch interrupts her. Zelena seems one for showboating and she is shocked that Regina doesn’t realize who she really is. In a twist of fate (which not going to lie I totally predicted) Zelena reveals that Cora is also her mother! Who her father is she doesn’t disclose. Could it be Rumple? Or maybe someone else we haven’t met yet? I’m excited to find out! Now we know how she was able to break the blood magic. Her quest for revenge stems from the fact that Cora gave her up before she became a royal and sent her away to OZ. Zelena is also jealous that her teacher Rumplestiltskin chose Regina to cast his dark curse and not her. They do say that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Back in Storybrooke Regina changes her mind about ‘meeting’ Henry. She sweetly offers to show Henry around Storybrooke sometime and grab some ice-cream. When Charming and Hook get back to the loft they have some big news to share. The information about the flying monkey’s plus what Emma and Regina saw at her office allows them to piece together just who they’re up against. Shocked as ever that yet another fairytale story is real, Hook sassily reminds her that she IS the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming.
Apparently Zelena has more to hide than just her true identity. As the episode draws to a close we see that she has a crazed Rumple locked in a cage muttering “you feed the madness and it feeds on you.” So that answers our question…Rumple doesn’t die so easily! Now to find out how exactly Zelena got her hands on him…
Next week we get to meet Rapunzel and a hooded figure is causing trouble in town. Tune in at 8/7c to see what nightmares start descending on Storybrooke!
