The Walking Dead has officially crossed a huge milestone, 100 episodes! What better way to celebrate then having an explosive season 8 premiere. The last time we saw our favorite survival group, they were defending Alexandria from Negan’s forces. In the beginning of the 100 episode we see Alexandria, Hilltop, and The Kingdom working together on a plan to attack Negan and his saviors. We see Daryl and Dwight exchanging messages via weapon of choice the crossbow, through the fence of Negan’s compound. Just before the group puts their plan in to action the leaders of the groups, that includes Rick, Maggie, and Ezekiel. Make a speech about how the world is whole lot bigger now, and that has become even more apparent now that Negan has been introduced into the show. Rick wants to take this bigger world and have everyone work together. Ezekiel agrees and declares that anyone who fights along side him shall be his brother (Rick) and his sister (Maggie). Now that everyone is one the same page, they have now become the holy trinity of survival groups. The next scene is without a doubt in my top 10 scenes. Why? Well, as a fan it pays homage to season 1 episode 1 of TWD, where it all began. It was almost shot scene for scene, even down to Carl parking next to a flipped over semi, and walking with an empty gas can. We even get a super cool cameo by the actress (Addy Miller) who played the little girl walker in the pink robe shot by Rick at the gas station. I love when shows pays homage to their beginnings, it’s the easter eggs that gets fans excited. Rick ends up scaring a man away who was asking Carl for help, Carl is visibly upset with his dad’s action saying hope was not enough. We then move on the groups doing their final preps for the war ahead. Carol, Sasha, Morgan, and Daryl were tasked with herding a massive group of walkers, by means of explosives, to where, we can only guess to the saviors compound. The Trinity now move on to Negan’s compound with their amour vehicles and shoot off a couple rounds, waiting for Negan to make an appearance. The show cuts away to old man Rick waking up in a dream like fantasy, with Michonne and Carl appearing the same age. Cut back to the compound, Negan finally steps out and tells Rick he does not wish to sacrifice his men, to play which male part is bigger than the other. Rick then calls out the names of Negan’s closest followers, Dwight, Simon, Gavin, Regina, and doesn’t even let Eugene speak. Rick gives the followers an ultimadion, join me or die. Negan then brings out Hilltop leader (Gregory), who says Hilltop stands with Negan, and that anyone who fights will not have a home to go back to. Unfortunately for Negan none are tempted, Gregory tries one last time to say Hilltop stands with Negan but is interrupted by Jesus who says Hilltop stands with Maggie. Rick then starts counting down from to 10, but starts shooting at 7, then all hell breaks loose. While the shooting is taking place at the compound, we see the walkers getting closer the compound. We then have Daryl being the badass he, is riding his motorcycle leading the walker herd with a series of small explosives. Rick then blows up an RV as the final explosive to lead the walkers. In the mists of the shooting Rick spots Negan hiding under ruble, he continues to shoot at Negan and it takes Gabriel to force Rick to leave. Rick then takes a polaroid of Negan taking cover, which make Rick smile. As Father Gabriel sets out to leave he sees a slightly wounded Gregory and chooses to get out of his car to help him. Unfortunately for Gabriel, Gregory is a selfish person and ends up running to the car leaving Gabriel to fend by himself. We then cut to Carl returning the gas station leaving two cans of food with a note saying he was sorry, and that man from before was watching from the bushes. We cut back to Rick and Daryl waiting for Gabriel, they decide to leave without him. Finally we see Gabriel still alive running to escape the walker herd and ends up running into a trailer, he then hears “I hope you got you’re shitting pants on”. Poor Gabriel can’t catch a break, he happens to pick one the spot that also happens to be the same hiding spot as Negan. The episode ends with Rick giving my favorite line of the episode “If we start tomorrow right now, no matter what comes next we’ve won, we already won!” My final thoughts on the season 8 premiere are conflicted, I liked the episode but didn’t love it. I felt like the episode was moving too fast and in too many directions. I’m excited to see what this season has in store. I can only hope that The Walking Dead will keep us (fans) on the edge of our seats.
