Prepare yourselves, Mystic Falls lovers…the Season 5 finale was a doozy!
We start off with Caroline crying over Stefan’s dead body back at the Salvatore mansion. Elena and Damon run downstairs to see what’s wrong and are stunned by what they find. Caroline wants reassurance that Bonnie will be able to bring him back, and Damon tells her that they will. As they cover Stefan’s body with a blanket, we see the familiar blue filter and Stefan watching over them from the other side. Wind picks up, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one holding my breath in the hopes that Stefan’s spirit didn’t get pulled into oblivion. He begins sliding down the corridor and grabs onto the corner of a wall, clearly struggling to hold on. A hand clasps his wrist and lo and behold…it’s Lexi! Always there to save our beloved Stefan when he needs it! Thanks, Lexi!
Damon, clearly frustrated, is off talking to Bonnie while simultaneously smashing anything he can get a hold of with what seems to be a wrought iron fire poker. She explains what happened to Maria and that that was their only chance at having Liv learn the resurrection spell that could bring their loved ones back from the other side before it crumbles. He tells her to find another witch, but Bonnie knows it’s not that easy. Enzo appears from the other side and tells Bonnie that he’s found another traveler that knows the spell.
Liv and Luke are driving in their car attempting to flee from their attempted murder of Elena and Stefan in last week’s episode. As they look ahead, they see Elena standing right in front of their car, prompting Luke to slam on the brakes. They realize that she’s doing exactly what they’d done to her, Stefan and Maria so when Luke puts the car in reverse, they see Caroline blocking their way. Elena tells Liv that Stefan is dead and that she’s going to help bring him back. Liv reminds Elena that if both doppelgangers are alive, the travelers will perform the spell and eradicate all magic except their own. Elena tells her that they won’t have the chance because they have to be killed beforehand. Luke tells them that they can’t help because their coven wouldn’t allow it, so Caroline gives Liv a little motivation by snapping Luke’s neck.
Markos and some of the travelers are moving the ‘Welcome to Mystic Falls’ sign back to where the spell erasing magic begins and explains why to Sheriff Forbes with a key demonstration…Julian a/k/a Tyler Lockwood. They push him inside of the spells proximity, where the hybrid is stripped of his werewolf gene, then his vampire gene…finally becoming the normal boy whose neck was snapped. Tyler is dead. Caroline will definitely not be happy about this, Markos!
Bonnie is still with Enzo and realizes that Luke is dead. As she tells Enzo that he’s another person to bring back, she sees Tyler as he passes through to the other side. Damon, Jeremy and Matt are coming up with a plan to destroy the travelers via mass murder. Sheriff Forbes had given Damon plans that show where the gas and water main are located in Mystic Falls, so he tells Caroline that they need to have the Sheriff lure all of the travelers to one spot where they’ll release the gas and create an explosion.
On the other side, Lexi and Stefan are looking for Alaric. Yes, Alaric! They’re in Mystic Grill, obviously searching for Alaric at the bar, and Lexi is grilling (no pun intended) Stefan about him and Caroline. He doesn’t realize that she’s been developing feelings for him, but we sure have! They see Sheriff Forbes and Markos walk in and realize that the Sheriff is trying to gather all of the travelers together. Jeremy is on the phone questioning Bonnie about how this plan will work. She tells him that when all of the travelers die at once, Liv will be performing the spell and since the gate will be open for the travelers to pass through to the other side, those on the other side can push back into the living. She tells him that once it’s done, she’ll stop being the anchor and everything will be fine. As Bonnie and Enzo continue walking, they run into Stefan…but it’s not Stefan, it’s Silas! Apparently he’s the traveler that Enzo found who knows the spell to bring everyone back. As much as we all love Stefan, getting the sarcastic comments from his doppelganger, Silas, is just so much fun to watch! As some like to say…Stilas forever! She’s still angry that Silas killed her father, but he tells her that he’s going to bring all of her friends back. “Bygones?” he asks.
Lexi and Stefan are back at the school searching for Alaric, when she tells him that maybe he’s found peace. He asks why she hasn’t yet and she tells him that maybe there’s still something left for her to do before finding her own. Silas is teaching Bonnie the resurrection spell so that she can teach Liv, as we get his trademark sarcasm that I’m sure satisfied all of the viewers. A Stefan look-alike with a sense of humor? Yes, please!
Matt and Jeremy find the gas main as the travelers are partying in Mystic Grill above them. Sheriff Forbes tries to leave, but Markos doesn’t allow her to. Can anyone else see what’s going to happen here? Damon is explaining to Elena that ‘Project Kaboom’ needs someone to trigger the explosion at Mystic Grill and he’s volunteering to be that someone. He asks Elena to respect his decision and tells her that he promises to make it back to her.
Bonnie finally learns the spell and steps outside of the tomb to speak to Enzo with Silas following suit. The wind picks up and Silas slams into a tree. Bonnie grabs a hold of Enzo and reaches out to grab Silas, but says “Bygones” and lets him slip into oblivion. Liv begins the resurrection spell as Matt and Jeremy release the gas underneath Mystic Grill. Bonnie is on the other side searching for Grams and tells her that they found a way out. Grams tells her that she won’t be able to survive so many people passing through her and that when it’s all said and done, Bonnie will still be the anchor and when the other side collapses so will she. She continues on that she’s not coming back because she’s already found peace by making sure that Bonnie will find hers. She tells Bonnie that she is not the only person in their family who can make sacrifices. Bonnie is obviously confused by what Grams is saying but is told that it’s not her concern and for her to simply remember that she looked out for her. They say their goodbyes and we see Grams walk away.
Sheriff Forbes and Markos are sitting at Mystic Grill and he accuses her of being up to something. She asks if there’s a gas leak and they head downstairs to check. The first chance she gets, she hits him over the head and, for a quick second, we think he’s knocked out. No such luck, though, because he grabs her leg and brings her down. Damon receives the awaited text from the Sheriff and gets into his car that is parked right outside of Mystic Falls city limits. He’s surprised when Elena jumps in the car and tells him to respect her decision to go with him. He tries to object, but she’s relentless so they speed off towards Mystic Grill triggering the explosion and successfully killing all of the travelers. Elena and Damon’s spirits find Bonnie and she tells them that when they pass through her, they’ll be on the other side with their bodies and that they need to get back to her as quickly as possible. They pass through and are at the scene of the explosion, where Elena runs into Alaric, but she can’t find Damon. He tells her to go and that he’ll find Damon himself. Damon wakes up and finds Sheriff Forbes trapped in the rubble. Alaric finds him as the Sheriff begins to wake up on the other side. Liv is still performing the resurrection spell and Luke notices that her nose is beginning to bleed. He runs outside to tell Bonnie that she needs to stop, but Stefan tells them that they can’t pass through Bonnie until Damon gets there. Luke says he doesn’t care and passes through Bonnie, rushing to his sister. He tells her to stop, but Liv tells him that she promised she would help them and continues with the spell. Enzo passes through and so does Tyler. He runs to Caroline and hugs her, but says that it felt different. He takes a rock and cuts the palm of his hand and they realize that he’s not healing. He’s no longer a hybrid. Say what?? Does this mean that they lose their magic when they come back and are no longer vampires, werewolves or hybrids? Or is it just because he died after the magic had been stripped away from him before he died? Time will tell!
The wind is picking up on the other side, but the rest of the group is still adamant on waiting for Damon. Bonnie grabs Elena against her will and brings her back to the living. Bonnie starts to cough and falls into Stefan, causing him to come back as well. On the other side, Markos tries to come back but Lexi fights him off. He gets pulled away into oblivion and Lexi tells Bonnie that she wouldn’t be a good best friend if she passed through before Damon came back. She knows that all of the activity is killing Bonnie and refuses to contribute, so she offers herself up. We don’t really get to see what happens to her though, so who knows? Don’t you just love Lexi?
Damon and Alaric finally make it to Bonnie and she quickly grabs Alaric. Luke continues to watch his sister struggle through the spell and decides to stop her. He performs his own spell and all of the candles die out. Bonnie grabs Damon and realizes that nothing is happening. Ok viewers, don’t forget to breathe now! Elena walks into the tomb and discovers that Luke and Liv are nowhere to be found. She tells Bonnie that they have to find them and restart the spell, but Bonnie tells her that that was their only shot. As she begins to cry, Bonnie tells her that Damon is there and we see him with the most brokenhearted look on his face. Cue the waterworks!! I can only assume that all of our tear ducts were completely severed at this point!
Stefan is sitting alone outside as Caroline joins him. He tells her that two of the people he loved are gone and is visibly upset. He tells her that Lexi never came out and neither did Markos and he knows it’s not a coincidence. He says that Damon finally had everything he wanted and was happy, and he breaks down into tears. Damon and Elena are saying their goodbyes even though she can’t hear him, and it’s literally heart wrenching. Through her uncontrollable tears, he tells her that she’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him in his 173 years on Earth and that he gets to die knowing that he was loved by Elena Gilbert. He tells her he loves her, she begs him to come back to her and he sadly says “Goodbye” and disappears.
Bonnie is on the phone with Jeremy explaining that there was never a way for her to stop being the anchor and that when the other side collapses, so will she. She explains that she died the day before their graduation and that everything else has been a bonus. She tells him to take care of Elena and Jeremy is frantically trying to keep her from hanging up on him. She tells him she loves him and hangs up. Matt walks in to tell Jeremy that the gas main is off, but Jeremy doesn’t hear a word he’s saying. He tells Matt that he has to get to Bonnie and begins to run to her, screaming her name the whole time. Elena is reunited with Alaric and is comforted by him as she sobs. They all overhear Jeremy screaming for Bonnie and gather in the woods where she is. As soon as he finds her, we see her with the all too familiar blue filter. She’s on the other side with Damon as the wind begins to pick up speed. Damon asks her if the other side is going down and she confirms that it is. She says that she’s sure there are a million other people they’d both rather be with, but she grabs his hand and awaits what’s to come. She asks if he thinks it’ll hurt and as he’s about to say that he doesn’t know, the screen turns white.
Are you still breathing out there? Or are you still trying to pick your jaw up off of the floor while you try and figure out what the heck just happened?
As upset as everyone is by what transpired in this finale, I have to say that Julie Plec and the writers of this show and The Originals are pure genius. The season finale of The Originals gave us a sense of peace for all of the characters. People made up with each other and things seemed to be on track. With that fresh in our minds, we head into The Vampire Diaries hoping for the same outcome and are, in Klaus’s words…bested! We are left hanging onto thoughts of whether or not Bonnie and Damon make it somehow. Elena, Jeremy and Stefan are clearly upset and grieving right along with us! This does, however, bring us back to earlier seasons of TVD where no one was safe and it’s rather nostalgic for those of us who have been loyal viewers.
Now, in my personal opinion, I’m hoping that Grams’ conversation with Bonnie earlier in the episode was an indicator that things will turn out ok for Bonnie and Damon, and possibly even Lexi. She told Bonnie that she’d found her peace in making sure that Bonnie finds hers, that Bonnie is not the only one in the family who is able to make sacrifices and for Bonnie to remember that she took care of her. So let’s all bow our heads and cross our fingers that Grams pulled a rabbit out of her hat (pun intended) and was able to push Bonnie and Damon through to the living. Keep your humanities in tact, people, because nothing is really ever gone in the Mystic Falls world! At least I hope not! I mean, what happened with Sheriff Forbes also? We need answers! Sadly, we also have to wait several months to receive those answers, so feel free to revisit this season’s episodes to satisfy your TVD withdrawals and see you soon for Season 6!
