“I will make it an eternity of misery for you.”
– Damon Salvatore, Season 1 Episode 20
Ah, the good old “eternity of misery” quote- made famous throughout the entire series of the Vampire Diaries. We first hear this quote in The Pilot and it’s later explained as Damon’s promise to Stefan for turning him into a vampire after the two brothers die from gunshot wounds back in 1864. Damon seems to be keeping it good on his promise of making it an eternity of misery; not only for Stefan, but for the rest of our other characters as well. With last weeks episode ending in Tyler’s arrival and Damon potentially murdering him, we kick off this week with a
bit lot of backstories. Tonight, we get a lot of answers, which of course, only leads to more questions.
We learn about the origins of The Sirens (yes, there’s TWO) and basically how they came to feed off the flesh of evildoers. So apparently a long time ago, there used to be a man named Arcadius, who was very kind towards the people of his village and his psychic ability allowed him to be empathetic towards them as well. However, after learning of his abilities, those same people (some of whom were once his friends) decided to burn him alive. Well then.
So in present day Damon is off looking for a man named Peter Maxwell in order to appease Sybil. He explains its kind of like an ex girlfriend, where even though she doesn’t have a hold of you anymore, she still does. So what’s actually happening here is that Damon’s basically doing everything in his power to make sure she’s a happy gal. And that includes tracking down Pete, killing his fellow employee, and question him about a family heirloom. Pete unfortunately doesn’t seem to be much help as he doesn’t know what it is, but apparently his son was looking for it too. Stay tuned.
Back at The Armory, we find Stefan and Alaric questioning Sybil who, instead of answering their questions about saving Damon, wants to tell them a story. She tells them of a girl who lived in the Mediterranean a long time ago who was exiled for having psychic abilities, and ended up on a distant island where she meets her soul sista, the island girl, who just so happens to be a psychic as well. This other Siren is still alive, and of course, would do anything to save Sybil. *Great.* The two girls, in hunger, call out to passing ships using their psychic abilities, which causes the ships to crash, and lets the girls steal the ships provisions. However, while the Island Girl sees this as a means of survival, the newly exiled sister feels remorse and decides she wants to live off the Island instead.Turns out Island Girl lied to her sister, and force fed her the meat of the sailors in order to stay alive… *Yikes.* We see here a parallel between the two sisters, and Stefan and Damon. And apparently so does Sybil, as she asks, “Which sister are you?”
Meanwhile Georgie is snooping around Ric’s house in search of the book what contains that symbol from hell, and is intercepted by Seline- the nanny. After some confrontation, Georgie warns Seline that she wouldn’t want to tell Ric… but of course Seline does once Georgie is gone and this leads to a very suspicious Ric.So very suspicious Ric follows a shadow (aka Georgie) into the vault and gets locked in there. *Double great.* So that allows Georgie to come back and vervains Stefan.
Now, inside Stefan’s mind, Sybil continues because her “boss” wants Stefan to hear the whole story. Turns out Good Sister, aka SYBILE, threw herself off a cliff after finding out she was eating the flesh of men, and Bad Sister was approached by none other than Arcadius whom she makes a deal with in order to save Sybil. They would trade immortality and youth in order to bring him the worst of humanity. Basically, Arcadius is the devil, and turns out the used the last of his powers before his death to make “hell”. The best part? Crazy, Bad Sister is actually Seline. Yup, the Nanny who’s currently taking care of Ric’s kids.
Now, back to Damon. After finding out that Pete was on vervain, he tries to kill him. So of course, in a Damon manner, he stabs Pete; however, MATT comes to save the day! He shoots Damon in the abdomen with a couple of bullets and calls Pete, dad! Looks like we’re gonna learn more about where Daddy Donavan was throughout Matt’s entire life! He feeds Pete some of Damon’s blood, and Matt tries to get some answers out of Damon. The only answer he gets? That Damon ripped Tyler’s throat out and he’s bleeding out in the back of a trunk.
By the time Matt gets there… well… Tyler Lockwood is dead. I repeat… TYLER LOCKWOOD IS DEAD. *Moment of silence please, and I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THIS LATER SO STICK WITH ME HERE!*
Anyways… Stefan awakes with the knowledge that Seline is the second Siren erased from his mind. Sybil asks again, “Which sister are you?” Is he the one who was victimized by Damon’s wrongdoings for the past century, always cleaning up his mess? Or is the the one who selfishly turned his brother into a vampire in fear of being alone? Stefan’s answer?
This seems to satisfy Sybil, and she in turn, gives him an answer of her own. If Stefan wants to save Damon, all he has to do is kill the Devil. And of course adds in a little more morbid stuff like how both him and Damon are destined for hell…
Afterwards, Georgie is seen meeting Seline. And she has a message. That Sybil can handle herself and to “piss off”. So Seline snaps Georgie’s neck, but not before telling her she qualifies for hell. Then Georgie is whisked off in a VERY Katherine like manner. *IS THIS A FREAKING HINT JULIE PLEC?*
Oh and Damon found the heirloom. The End.
Let’s discuss shall we? SO YAY MATT IS FINALLY BACK! But umm… WHAT THE HELL?????? (No pun intended) They killed off Tyler???? Why? Why bring back a fan favorite just to have him appear for two seconds and then have him killed? And it wasn’t even in some grand way either. He didn’t go out guns blazing, he went out in order to satisfy a point: that Damon f&^ked up. That Damon, with his humanity off, has done the unspeakable and killed someone that Elena would most likely never forgive him for killing. And if she did forgive him, I’d be VERY surprised. Not only did she grow up with this kid, he constantly protected the gang time and time again. So yeah, Damon f&^ked up.
And can we discuss this whole Damon mind control thing? I thought Sybil replaced all of his memories of Elena… but he still knows who Elena is and that they dated… he just seems to have a fancy for Sybil now? What??? And where was Enzo and Bonnie? Literally the best part of the show right now? I mean, if Caroline got a cameo, they should too.
Overall… I don’t know how I feel about this season. It’s interesting enough to keep me watching… but it doesn’t hit my standards of VAMPIRE DIARIES. The whole hell thing just became so broad and out of nowhere and I feel like there are just so many holes in the plot. The St. John sisters? How did they tie into this? What was the big secret? That there is, in fact, a hell? I don’t know, I feel like the show should have ended with Nina Dobrev’s exit, maybe even before… I miss the plot line of the founding families and mystic falls and the moonstone and The Originals. It just doesn’t feel like it’s Vampire Diaries anymore. But hey, it’s still a rocking good show.
Oh and that whole Seline thing, I knew they were going to give her a bigger part in the show. TVD never saves a sidebar character unless they somehow become relevant later on… and Georgie’s death resembling Kat’s?! Does that mean that, in a way, Katherine is still alive somewhere in this hell? Julie Plec did say that Nina Dobrev may not be coming back as Elena… but nothing was said about Katherine!!!!
Anyways, till next week!
