The Tomorrow People #1.18 – Smoke and Mirrors
By Anna: 31 March 2014
Stephen has to make a decision whether to continue trusting his uncle, Jedikiah or follow the Founder (Simon Merrells).
At Ultra everyone is hands on deck as there is a new boss being the Founder – Bathory. Ultra was founded by him and his vision was not to live a mutations, a paranormal freak of nature but be a blessed being with special gifts. The Ultra that Jedikiah formed is over from killing paranormals. He wants paranomals to live in peace and if they abuse their powers will still be dealt with.
John is blaming himself for killing Cassie as it was something he never wanted to do again. Cara is trying to console him so he doesn’t lose himself again. Stephen goes to the Underground to tell them about the Founder’s new Ultra. Cara is cautious and does not wish to get rid of their spies. Plus they are wondering where Jedikiah has disappeared to.
There is a new breakout who is a magician, Monty the Magnificent (Wesley Taylor) doing tricks by teleporting in front of humans. So Hilary wants to go after him with Stephen to make a good impression on Bathory. Stephen is not sure whether to trust Bathory so bringing in this outbreak will help him see if things have changed or not.
Stephen uses the tracking device to an alleyway but to his surprise is confronted by Jedikiah. He has changed the settings of the tracking device to lure Stephen to him. Jedikiah still wants the Founder destroyed. He believes that he will use Stephen to manipulate him with his ability to stop time and without Jedikiah to protect him exploit him as it is crucial to his plans. Millions will die. Stephen just doesn’t believe what he says.
Hilary has tracked down Monty at the Fort Green Theatre. Cara has also tracked him down, so Cara and John go topside. Hilary recognises Cara Coburn so they all join each other at the show. Very uncomfortable for Stephen. They watch the show and Monty disappears. So they go after him but Cara and Hilary have a girl’s fight outside. So Stephen’s cover is not blown John and Stephen join in on the fight. Eventually, Cara manages to teleport out with Monty.
Jedikiah turns up at the Jameson house where he finds Luca (Jacob Kogan) home alone. Jedikiah tells Luca everything about his brother’s power. So when Stephen arrives home also to be greeted by Astrid there is a confrontation between Stephen and Jedikiah. Stephen tries to convince Luca that his uncle is sick. Jedikiah is desperate and puts a gun to Luca’s head forcing Stephen to show his powers to his brother. Luca is confused and storms out of the house. Stephen teleports Jedikiah out of the house to a park where they fight.
Hilary informs Bathory that The Tomorrow People have the breakout. Bathory wants Stephen who knows that he has ties with them to give them a message. Bathory wants the breakout released in exchange for a truth. He doesn’t want his daughter’s death for nothing.
Stephen goes to the Underground to pass on the message but, of course, Cara will not allow this. While Monty is showing Russell tricks he teleports topside. Cara is jealous of Stephen and Hilary and he said they were a mistake and that Hilary is his Ultra partner.
While John is playing chest with TIM, TIM’s mainframe is hacked into. The only person who can do this is Jedikiah who is sending a message to John to meet him. John meets Jedikiah who asks for John’s help in the name of humanity and he needs his allies. Jedikiah wants to help John atone for Cassie’s death plus save someone else who is Roger. John agrees but if Jedikiah is wrong will put a bullet in him.
The tactical squad is preparing to go out and capture the breakout who they find on a subway. Monty is captured and taken back to Ultra where Bathory injects him with a substance. Stephen thought he was going to take away his powers but, in fact, had put a tracking device in his neck. Bathory reiterates to Stephen that he should trust him and not his uncle.
Jedikiah takes John to where he has Roger’s cryogenically frozen body. They need Stephen to bring back Roger to life but John will need Cara to persuade Stephen.
As a favour to Stephen, Hilary finds Luca at the library and brings him home. He tries to explain that he was only protecting him and that he didn’t want him to be burdened with his problem. The brother relationship is totally strained.
Hilary teleports into Stephen’s bedroom and as she found Luca for him he owes her. So the two of them makeout.
John goes to Cara for her to help him find Stephen. While Cara goes to Stephen’s home she senses the makeup between him and Hilary. Cara is so jealous.
At Ultra Stephen is called to see Bathory. Bathory shows Stephen a map of over 200 paranormals who have tracking devices in them who are in the city. He wants Stephen to lead them to a place called Refuge. I somehow don’t trust the Founder as I think this is his own personal army for evil. The Founder has rebuilt Stephen’s father Machine and has amplified it. He wants Stephen to do a test run as his DNA is needed to open the portal. So Stephen agrees. Stephen finds his dad but in a time from when he and Luca were kids. Roger wants to explain to him that being with the Founder is not a good thing but the link is broken between them.
Jedikiah notices Roger’s brainwaves increasing and knows that Stephen is using the Machine and this is not a good thing.
So who are we going to believe Jedikiah or Bathory?
