This week’s episode of Supernatural started on a farm in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. We see a farmer come out with a rifle and a skinny man running out of the cow pin. He jumped over the fence and was hit by a car. The man turned out to be Garth (played by DJ Quails) who has been missing for 6 months.
Sam walked into the local hospital and flashed his FBI badge at the front desk. He informs the attendant that he was looking for the John Doe, who he describes as a “skinny Ichabod Crane looking kind of guy”. When he gets to Garth’s room Dean is already there. Garth is handcuffed to the bed because he was being charged with killing a cow. Garth has been doped up on pain killers and Dean wanted to give him adrenalin. Sam’s worried it will kill him, so he slapped him in the face instead.
Garth woke up in a state of confusion. Dean informed him why he was hand cuffed to the bed. He started to panic and became ill. While Garth was in the bathroom Sam noticed the mark on Dean’s arm. Dean revealed to Sam that it was a gift from Cain. The mark was his chance to destroy Abandon once in for all. They notice how quiet it was in the bathroom and checked on Garth. Garth had escaped out the window.
The Winchesters hurried out of the hospital searching for Garth. All that was found was his hospital clothing in the parking lot. Dean tells Sam to check on the farmer, while he checks on the security cameras. At the farm, the farmer tells Sam that last week his chickens were attacked, and the week before it was a goat. The farmer thought it was some kind of satanic sacrifice because the organs were removed. Sam called Dean and told him the bit of information. Dean lied to Sam about finding anything. He told Sam that the cameras were in the wrong direction.
Dean walked into Sam and Sam noticed the photos of the vehicle Dean had in his hands. Dean wanted to work this alone. The hunter still felt that he was a danger to his brother. Dean ended up telling Sam that the vehicle belonged to Bess Meyers ( played by Sarah Smith).
Sam and Dean arrive at Bess’ home, busted open the door when they heard Garth. Garth tried calming Dean and Sam down. Dean heard him talking to a woman and asked where she was. A woman came out of the closet and attacked Sam. Sam cut her on the wrist with a knife. Garth positions himself between Bess and Sam. He pleaded for Sam to not hurt her. We learn that not only is Bess a werewolf but Garth is also.
Garth was hunting a wolf about six months ago and was bitten. He knew that there was no cure but accepted his fate. He was about to commit suicide when Bess found him by smell. Garth has been living off of the local wild life. He wasn’t eating humans like most werewolves did. We also find out that Bess was a second generation born werewolf. Garth explained to Dean and Sam that her pack took him in. The pack was a peaceful pack, and to prove it he asked them to come to see them pray.
At the Meyers house they are greeted by Joy Meyers (played by Eve Gordon). She tells Dean that he doesn’t need to worry about entering her house; after all he’s the one carrying silver. We see Garth playing the piano why a group of werewolves sung. Joy points out her husband Rev. Jim Meyers (played by Tom Butler), who is the alpha of the pack. The Reverend understands Dean’s hesitation around the pack. He knows that werewolves and hunters have a long history. He told Dean they were not that different and invited him to break bread to find out.
During the lunch scene we find out the reason they wore a silver bullet around their neck. It was a reminder at how precious life is, because some of their kind thought they were indestructible. We learn that Jim’s wife was killed by a hunter. Instead of acting on revenge he looked forward because of his daughter. He later met Joy who helped him raise Bess and treated her like her on daughter. Joy mentioned that her Daddy had also helped in shaping Jim into the person he was. Joy’s father was the previous pastor of the church.
Meanwhile Sam went to interview the local Sheriff to get in order to get more information on the Meyer’s family. The Sherriff informed him they were the pillars of the community. He then mentioned to the Sheriff that he’s not really interested in the family, but unusual sightings.
Back at the Meyers Dean snoops around the refrigerator and was cornered by Bess’s cousins.. Garth intervenes and then confronts Dean. He inquires on why Dean’s trying to make it hard on everyone. Dean told Garth that he just doesn’t see how Garth couldn’t tell that something fishy was going on with his new family. Dean brought up Garth’s disappearance again. Garth didn’t get in touch with the Winchester’s because he was afraid and had moved on. The werewolf told him he constantly thought of the brothers and Kevin. At the mention Kevin’s name Dean got emotional and told Garth that Kevin was gone.
Sam and Dean met up and contemplated leaving until they received a call from the Sheriff. He tells Sam he’s found something unusual. The Sheriff shows them a mutilated deer. He doesn’t feel that anything around the area could have done the damage to the deer. Upon further inspection Dean determines that it’s fresh blood and the Sheriff agrees. Then we pan to the Sheriff’s hand and extracting claws and teeth.
Dean threw a silver knife and kills the Sheriff before he can shot Sam or himself. They checked the Sheriff over and saw that he wore the same silver bullet as the Meyer’s family. The only exception was that it had the words Ragnarök engraved on it. Ragnarök was an ancient Norse myth about the destruction of the Norse Gods and the end of the world.
Dean discovered while reading the bible that during Ragnarök a wolf Fenrir devours Odin the head god. Dean also discovered that they are cults that consider Fenrir as a deity. These cults are called The Maw of Fenrir. The story wasn’t just a bible story to the cult, but an action plan for human extension.
Dean was confronted by the Reverend and inquired about his involvement in The Maw. Jim tells him that The Maw had been gone for years. Dean checked his necklace for the word and noticed that it it’s blank. Dean asked him where his necklace with the word Ragnarök was. Jim told him he doesn’t know what he was talking about. Dean described to him the Sheriff‘s necklace and informed him that his daughter was missing. The Sheriff understood who was involved.
Back at Beth’s house Sam is knocked out by the cousins. Then he was brought to the barn where Garth and Bess were tied up. When Sam comes around Joy told him that her brother’s death was the last straw. She believed in her father’s teaching that there could be no peace as long as man existed. She claimed that her husband still held on to his humanity, because he was bitten not born.
Dean ambushed the cousins at the house. He had Jim’s sweater to hide his sent. At the barn there was a tumble and Dean ended up shooting Joy.
Later that day Sam and Dean said their goodbyes to Garth. Garth blamed himself for Kevin, but Dean took the blame. Garth offered to make things right and help Dean hunt Abandon. Dean expressed to him that someone had to live to tell the story. Dean did something un Dean like and gave Garth a goodbye hug
Finally we see Sam and Dean back at Sam’s car. Dean’s tried to apologize and asked Sam to work with him again. Sam still can’t forgive and forget. He gave Dean his terms for joining him back on the road. The terms were basically they were partners not brothers for now.
