This week on Reign a few different relatives showed up at court, Bash and Kenna found a way to forget all their past troubles, and Francis made a decision that could change everything.
It’s been a month since Francis locked Mary in the tower. Mary and her ladies are having a snowball fight out in the courtyard when Mary receives word that things in Scotland have taken a turn for the worst. Mary goes to Francis to tell him that what her brother warned them about is happening; the Protestants are about to attack Edinburgh in an attempt to oust Marie de Guise. Francis tells Mary that instead of arguing they should go to his mother together to ask for armies to send to Scotland. When they reach the Queen she tells them that the line of succession in England has been decided, and that Elizabeth will be the next queen, not Mary. Henry isn’t very happy with this news. He tells Mary that she is absolutely useless to France and he threatens her life.
Mary decides that the best plan of action is to send for help from her uncle, the Duke of Guise. Francis warns Mary that her uncle isn’t trustworthy. Penelope isn’t taking too well to being cast out. She goes to Henry’s chambers to tell him that she is pregnant. Catherine doesn’t buy it though. Greer’s father shows up with two of her sister’s in tow so he can meet Lord Castleroy. Her father says that Greer should start introducing her young sisters to potential suitors since she has caused so much trouble trying to find a husband.
Cut to a seemingly happier marriage Bash and Kenna have advanced further in their relationship since their first kiss a month ago, but not as far as Kenna would like. She asks him why he always stops things. They are married and they’re both experienced. Bash says that he knows that not all of her past experiences have been pleasant, so he wants to make her forget them.
The Duke of Guise arrives at court and he lets on that he knows the situation of the castle and the King. He tells them that his price for helping is getting appointed Lord Magistrate of France. Mary and Francis are doubtful that they’ll be able to give him what he wants but they know they have to try. Catherine knows what Penelope is up to so she catches her in the kitchens about to sleep with another one of the servants. Catherine locks Penelope in the tower so she can come check on her every month to watch as her belly grows, or as she figures, won’t grow at all.
When Greer introduces her father to her fiancé Lord Castleroy proves just how sweet he is when he tells her father that he is not interested in the dowry, he just wants his blessing to marry Greer. After all the trouble Greer has been through, it’s so nice to see that she is going to end up with an extremely kind man. Someone who is significantly less sensible, Henry has decided that he is going to invade Calais because God has told him that he would be victorious. Francis is extremely concerned so he goes to his mother. Catherine reassures him that she has given instructions to Henry’s generals to not act any orders until she gives them the okay.
Elsewhere in the castle Bash continues to help Kenna forget her past lovers. He tells her he wants her to remember only him when they’re done. Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t mind being Kenna at this point. Francis calls for an audience with General de Guise because he knows that there is something else he wants. He wants to be Francis’ general magistrate, not Henry’s. Those are the terms, if Francis wants his help. To ensure he can trust de Guise Francis tells him that he is going to Scotland with him, that way he knows he will keep him alive so they can both get what they want.
Francis tells Mary that he has convinced the Duke that it was in his best interest to help his niece. He tells her that he will be joining the Duke in Scotland. Mary is concerned with Francis’ safety but he reassures her that the Duke wont get what he wants if Francis dies, so he’ll be safe. Mary is overcome with gratitude for Francis. She can’t believe that he is risking his life to safe her mother and her country. Bash walks by and sees them sharing a passionate kiss. He retreats back to his chambers to find Kenna, because now he has something he wants to forget. The time for teasing is over so he and Kenna take things all the way.
When Catherine goes to check on Penelope in the tower and the disgraced kitchen girl admits that she was never pregnant. Catherine tells her that she is going to send her to Italy to get trained in proper manners and if she works hard she might be welcomed back to the castle as a part of Catherine’s “flying squad” AKA her group of spies and con artists.
At dinner with Lord Castleroy Greer’s father is a bit to harsh with his daughter for Lord Castleroy’s liking. He tells him that he knows that all of his mines are played out. He also says that he is going to give each other Greer’s sisters 10,000 francs each for their future dowries so they can marry men of title. The only condition is that Greer gets the final say in whom her sisters marry so she can make sure they are marrying for love. He says that a good businessman always knows what something is worth and to him Greer is priceless. Lord Castleroy officially takes the cake as the sweetest man ever.
Mary and Francis are tangled up in their sheets and she is still overflowing with gratitude. Francis is hopeful that when he returns Mary won’t be the only one waiting for him. Mary jokes that he is suddenly very sure of himself, and Francis tells her that just in case he’ll have another go around. His brother finds himself in similar circumstances with his wife. Kenna realizes that Bash wants to forget his past heartache. She tells him that she wants him to look into her eyes so that when they’re finished he’ll remember only her. There’s an overwhelming amount of loving going on in the castle lately.
Henry found out that Catherine and Francis have been undermining his authority. He tells them that he has fired all of the generals and sent the forces to Callais, he will join them later that night. Francis realizes that with General de Guise’s army they could ambush the English at Callais and win. Henry is happy that he and his son will be making history just as he has always dreamed. Mary is obviously displeased with Francis. I’m not sure if they can bounce back from this argument. Mary says that their marriage is an awful mistake. She had many opportunities to help Scotland, but she never did because she loves Francis. She makes Francis swear that he’ll stop making her promises he knows he can’t keep, and that he’ll come back alive.
