Last night on the Reign season finale Francis reached his wits end with his father, Mary shared a secret, and a death occurred that changed everything.
The celebrations continued for the victors of Calais. Henry is hell-bent on showing off for Mary, the woman he now intends to wed since he has decided to kill his own son. Francis realizes that there is nothing they can do now against Henry, since his paranoia is heightened another assignation would be unsuccessful. He, along with his mother and Mary, decide that the only option left is to organize a coup d’état. Francis knows of some generals who were fired and he agrees to go find them. In the meantime Mary and Catherine must stay to endure Henry’s madness.
Leith has returned to the castle and now is a man with lots of property to his name. He goes to Greer to tell her the good news that they can be together now. She however knows that even now that he has a decent amount of money and land it is not enough to alleviate her father’s debts and provide dowries for her sisters.
Henry decides that he will show off the French’s might by organizing a mock sea battle. The only problem is that he is so deranged that he exchanges the fireworks that were to be used with actual gunpowder, resulting in the death of many of the soldiers who just returned home from battle. Francis finds out about all the dead soldiers and becomes infuriated with his father. He also learns that 3,000 are set to leave for England the next day.
Mary and Catherine realize that Henry intends to kill Francis and marry Mary. Henry has once again asked for an annulment with Catherine. Mary speaks with her uncle the Duke of Guise and he tells her that she needs to become the most powerful woman in France, to give the people hope. She does this by showing up at the jousting tournament the next day wearing the English coat of arms and basically making her claim for the English throne.
During the joust Henry decides that he wants to take part. That was a bad idea for Henry because he gets gravely injured when his opponent strikes him near his face. We find out that the person underneath the suit of armor was Francis and not whatever nobleman was intended to be in the joust. Francis has taken matters into his own hands.
Bash and Nostradamus continue to search for the darkness as Kenna and Pascal wait with the guards Bash sent. When the men finally reach Visaguard they find all sorts of signs about the Darkness. Back at the house the Darkness comes and tries to attack Kenna and Pascal. It tells Pascal to kill Kenna and offer her blood to the gods. Before it can hurt either of them Bash returns and delivers a fatal blow to the Darkness. The man warns Bash that if they don’t find blood to offer to the gods the gods will stop protecting them and the plague will return.
The injury to King Henry is fatal and since they don’t know about what Francis did Mary and Catherine accept that it is the will of God. When Catherine says goodbye to Henry he tells her that he always loved her in some way and then tells her to reach out to Diane, since she is like extended family. When Francis says goodbye to his father he tells him that he was named after Henry’s older brother who was meant to be king. Henry poisoned his water when they were younger during a tennis match. That is the man who has been haunting Henry these past months. He tells Francis that hurting a family member haunts you all your days. I’m sure we will see the effects of Francis’ actions against his father next season. Bash returns to the castle just after his father dies. He tries to keel before Francis, the new king, but Francis pulls him up and embraces him.
Lola has gone into labor and is unable to make it back to the castle. The woman whose home she took refuge in tells her that the baby should have come and that both her life and the baby’s are in danger. She writes a letter to Mary telling her that she can share her secret and that if she dies and the baby lives she wants her to raise the child as if it were her own.
After his father’s death Francis is haunted by what he has done. He goes to Mary and tells her the only way for them to prevent themselves from hardening their hearts is to share their deepest burdens with each other. Mary goes first telling Francis about Lola. She tells him to go to her since there isn’t much time. Just as Francis is about to leave Catherine tells Mary they have to secure the castle because cases of the plague have been reported in near by villages. Turns out the Darkness was right. Mary runs to Francis and tells him that now he cannot leave. Francis tells her he is still going to get Lola and the baby and return with them to the castle. As the new king Francis isn’t starting off making the greatest decisions. As he leaves the castle the gates are shut between him and Mary, putting both a physical and metaphorical wall between them.
Reign will return in October with all new episodes.
