This week on Reign Francis marched off to battle, and Mary proved just how far she is willing to go to save her country.
Francis arrives at the battlefront to find the troops are battered and dwindling in numbers. He sheds his cloak to better blend in with the troops and tells them he is going to lead them to capture the castle that stands between them and their road to Calais. Back at the castle Mary is worried for Francis’ safety, but still upset about the way things went down before he left. Catherine’s cousins Roman and Cortenza de Medici arrive at court. Roman has trade to attend to and Cortenza is there to take back the guards she lent Catherine. Mary receives word from her mother that the only way for her to survive the protestant attack is to flee Scotland in secret. Mary goes to Catherine to ask her for money to help her mother. Catherine tells her that the courts money is all tied up in the war and that she does not keep a stash of personal money like Mary thinks she does.
Mary doesn’t believe Catherine and it seems she already had a back up plan in place in case Catherine denied her request. Mary hired a mercenary to steal Catherine’s gold. She heard from her Uncle that this man would do whatever it takes to get a job done. What Mary doesn’t realize is that he means he’ll literally do anything to get the job done, and his way of getting the money is kidnapping Catherine.
Lola and Lord Julian have grown very fond of each other and Lola is finally beginning to show. Lola still has her doubts about Julian’s intentions and she expresses her concern to Greer when she finds out that her dowry has been transferred to Julian. Greer says that maybe they were both two desperate people looking for a quick match, but if the end of the their story is happy why should it matter. Lola tells Greer she hopes Lord Castleroy is her happy ending, and asks if she thinks of Leith. Greer says she thinks of him every day and prays for his survival.
Speaking of Leith, as Francis and his men are advancing towards Calais they are attacked by English soldiers. Francis almost gets taken out but one of his men saves him. That soldier is no other than Leith. It’s ironic to think that Francis has no idea who Leith is. Francis tells Leith that he is in his debt. Francis and his men advance on and when they reach their destination Francis tells them that he can tell that the castle is undermanned because he recognized some of the soldiers that attacked them as the same ones who had attacked previously.
The English roll out a cannon and attack the men from above. Francis tells them that their only chance at survivial is if the soldiers draw the English’s attention by advancing to the right while he goes to the left and shoots a flaming arrow at the gunpowder next to the cannon. His plan works, but it leaves Leith injured. Francis tells the rest of the men to get word to the Duke that the road to Calais is clear. Francis tells Leith he needs to live and asks what it is that keeps him fighting. Leith says it is his love for a woman. Francis tells him that he needs to survive so he can return home and marry the woman he loves. He says that it doesn’t matter if she is above is status because as the future king of France he can give out lands and titles to people. So basically this means that Leith would be able to be with Greer. Should be interesting to see what happens if he returns to court.
Mary is very concerned that the mercenary she hired is actually going to harm Catherine because Roman gets what appears to be Catherine’s ear delivered to him. Catherine is very smart and even though she is blindfolded she knows that the person who kidnapped her must be a mercenary hired by someone in the castle who has had it out for her for a long time and is desperate for money. Catherine is pretty convinced that Mary is the one responsible so she tells the mercenary that she will double whatever he is being paid if he brings her the head of the person responsible. He goes to Mary and tells her that she has to pick someone to pin the responsibility to. Mary is obviously not very keen on the idea that she has to choose someone to die. It appears that Mary’s encounter with Cortenza left a lasting impression because when the mercenary delivers a head to Catherine, it ends up being to the shock of Catherine, Cortenza’s.
Kenna urges Bash to look into Julian’s past and get closer to him. Bash finds out that Julian is going on a hunting trip but did not request any hunting gear, only a one-horse carriage to carry enough belongings for one person. Kenna tells Lola this so she tells Julian that he can keep her for much less than he thinks. Julian leaves and is about to run away when he has a change of heart. He goes back to Lola and tells her what he was going to do, and says he suspects that she already knew. Julian had a falling out with his family because they’re not good people. He has no money of his own and he did marry Lola for her money. But once he started to fall in love with her it got harder to keep his secret so his fear made him want to run away. Lola tells him that she doesn’t mind living a simpler life with him. And Julian says he will prove himself to her everyday for the rest of their lives.
When Catherine returns to the castle she launches a full-scale investigation of Cortenza’s chambers and Mary’s. Roman finds a note in Cortenza’s chambers that shows that she was being blackmailed and was totally penniless. So Catherine is convinced Cortenza was the culprit of her kidnapping. In reality, the mercenary planted the note there. Mary has what she wants, Catherine’s hidden gold, but she isn’t quite done with the mercenary’s services. Now that Cortenza is dead Mary bought her guard’s services. She is sending the mercenary with the guards to Scotland to help her mother escape.
Next week Mary and Catherine plot to kill Henry as his madness grows deeper and deeper.
