This week Reign ventured out of the castle and in to the woods to give us a better look at what exactly has been lurking out there all season. Before we get to the darkness in the woods, here’s what was going on inside the castle.
Kenna meets with the King, whose sexual appetite seems to be getting stronger by the day. He takes things up a notch when he brings in a prostitute for Kenna to “play with.” After their tryst Kenna wakes up to find the prostitute dead in the bed beside her with hand marks around her neck. The first light festival is that night and Mary tries to convince Lola that she should come. Mary tells her that she needs to get married as fast as possible; before anyone finds out she is pregnant. She tells her that she has a suitor for her to meet at the festival. Down in the kitchen we finally get more of Greer and Leith’s forbidden romance. He tells her that Lord Castleroy is back at court once again to try and catch her eye. Greer expresses that she is not interested in him and that she wishes that her and Leith could be together.
Olivia seems to be on the mend so Nostradamus inquires how she ended up in the woods. Olivia said she escaped into the woods the night the castle was taken by the Italians. While in the woods she was taken captive by the peasants in the village and then was handed over to the “darkness.” She told Nostradamus that the being fed on her until one day she was set free. Out in the woods Bash is saying his goodbyes to Rowan. She tells him that she knows his true identity. She tries to convince him to stay. When they go outside Rowan notices that her home has been marked by the darkness. Bash tells her that he is going to stay and help her fight.
At the first light festival Kenna informs Catherine about what the King has been up to. As she has been accustomed to, Catherine agrees to help Kenna clean up the King’s mess. Mary introduces Lola to the count she invited. A servant offers Mary a pomegranate torte and tells her that her sister ate 10 a day and she got pregnant within a month. Francis laughs and tells Mary that the girl meant well because there are two nations anxious for them to have a family. Seeing Francis acting all husband like towards Mary is the cutest thing. When Francis spots Lola he tells Mary that Phillip is not the suitor he would have chose for Lola…uh oh, what’s that supposed to mean Francis?
Phillip expresses to Lola that he likes her and that he is on a strict deadline. His father has told him he must marry by the end of the year he will lose his status. He offers Lola a candle and she tells him that he’ll have to look up at her window see if the flame of love burns in her heart. Lord Castleroy has organized a private meal for himself and Greer. He wants to impress her and show her that there is more to him than just talking about pepper trading. Poor Lord Castleroy is adorable in his attempts at courting Greer; he even accidentally sets his clothing on fire from a candle. Thankfully Leith is there to help put it out.
Catherine speaks with the King about his recent actions. Henry has been obsessing over England and when Mary Tudor is going to die. He tells Catherine that he is tired of being pushed around by women lately so he wanted to express his power as King. Francis goes to meet with Lola, to let her know that he doesn’t think that Phillip is right for her. Lola lies to Francis and tells him that she is in no rush to get married and that she isn’t trying to get married soon because of what happened in Paris. I’m intrigued by whether or not Francis is going to find out about the baby. Out in the woods Bash is helping Rowan’s family prepare their house for a fight. They try to tell him that it is useless because they have already been marked and they can’t leave because anywhere else they go they’ll be persecuted for their beliefs. Rowan drugs Bash with some tea because they do not plan to fight back.
Leith visits Greer in her chambers to share some exciting news; Lord Castleroy has offered him an apprenticeship at one of his spice houses in Spain. Greer expresses her excitement for him because this is his chance to rise up into the merchant class. Leith is conflicted because he doesn’t want to leave Greer behind. She tells him that they both knew they wouldn’t last forever and that this saves her the trouble of having to break his heart. He responds by telling her that he loves her. Too cute! I really want Greer to throw caution to the wind and just be with Leith.
Francis has some interesting information to share with Mary, the Count is gay therefore he is not a suitable match for Lola. Mary realizes that Francis has spoken with Lola. Francis tells Mary of his and Lola’s shared night in Paris. Mary tells him that she understands because she lies and tells him that she put the pieces together when she saw them return together. Mary goes to Lola and asks her to just tell Francis. She suggests that Lola marry the Count since they both have secrets to hide. She tells Lola about his secret and says that if she doesn’t accept his proposal she will tell Francis hers. When Mary returns to her chambers she finds Francis surrounded by dozens of candles. He tells her that there have been too many regrets in their short time being married. It appears that Francis is ready to make up with more than words but Mary tells him that she doesn’t think it is likely she’ll get pregnant that night so he doesn’t have to. Sweetly Francis tells her that he doesn’t make love to her because he wants a baby, he wants a baby because he loves her. Aw!
Greer meets with Lord Castleroy to thank him for offering Leith the apprenticeship. Turns out it was Greer’s idea. Castleroy is catches on that Greer has feelings for him. Greer tells him that she has accepted all the kindness she can from him and that she is not interested in courting him. Back in the woods the “darkness” comes to visit Rowans house. She makes the mistake of looking up and is taken by the darkness. The next morning in the castle Mary speaks with Lola. She expresses that she is concerned that Lola was only with Francis once and he got her pregnant yet she is not pregnant and it has been months. Mary tells Lola that she will help Lola find a suitor and that she can take her time. Afterwards Lola speaks with Greer and finds out that Greer’s parents have sent a suitor for her and that she is all but engaged.
It looks like next week we will get to see some brotherly interaction from Francis and Bash.
