This week on Reign the honeymoon stage was officially over. It was time to get back the politics, backstabbing, and murder…and this episode had all of those things.
Two months after Mary and Francis’ wedding they return to French court after spending some time away in wedded bliss. Of course the question on everyone’s mind is whether or not Mary is carrying the future heir to France yet. There is trouble back at court because France is on the brink of war with Bohemia. Kenna has her eyes on the archduke of Bohemia so the King presents her to him to hold up his end of the bargain that he will find someone for Kenna to marry. Upon his return the Queen informs Francis that Bash never made it to Spain and that the guards who accompanied him were found dead in the woods. Speaking of Bash, he has taken to the woods. He runs in to another hunter and she takes him back to her home where she lives with her brother.
Greer holds nothing back when she grills Mary on if she is pregnant or not. Mary becomes very bashful and claims that two months isn’t that long. Lola is acting very strange around Mary, no doubt it has something to do with the fact that her and Francis were in bed together so soon before he reunited with Mary. The dress Mary brought Lola from her trip is a bit too snug and she is refusing to eat one of her favorite treats. Something is definitely up and I think we all have it figured out at this point.
Back in the woods the girls brother is adamant that he leave when a crazed Olivia stumbles upon them. She has been touched by the darkness, and seems possessed and willingly cuts open her arm to offer up blood to be drunk. Yikes things haven’t gone well for her since we last saw her. Bash brings her back to the castle to Nostradamus where they discuss what the Pagans could be up to in the woods.
Meanwhile in the castle Kenna is putting on her best doe eyed virgin act for the archduke. I have to give Kenna credit, she definitely is a go-getter puts on quite the show. In less pure circumstances the King is in the throws of passion with the archduke’s sister. In a haze of lust Henry presses Cecilia up against a window and she falls out of it to her death! This puts Henry in quite the pickle so he turns to the one person he knows can help him, his Queen. I love whenever Henry and Catherine join forces; it’s so much more fun than when they’re plotting against each other.
Catherine has also made nice with Mary now that she and Francis are married and are supposedly assured a long happy marriage. In one of the most hilarious scenes I’ve seen on Reign thus far, Catherine gives Mary a whole slew of concoctions that will help her and Francis conceive a child. To give you a taste of what went down Catherine said something along the lines of “rub this one on his…. you know.” I was dying of laughter.
Kenna, like the rest of us, knows exactly what is going on with Lola…SHES PREGNANT. To Kenna this a job well done on Lola’s part because this will secure her place at court as a royal mistress. Lola however isn’t too keen on the idea and is feeling extremely guilty about the whole situation. Lola has heard whispers about people who can end pregnancies. One of Kenna’s servants seems to have had such a procedure so she tells Lola who she is. While still in the castle Bash makes an appearance in Mary’s chambers to tell her of what he thinks Francis has done. He warns her that if Francis ever crosses him again he’ll kill him and tells her that for her sake she should find out just whom she is married to.
Henry and Catherine have managed to get Cecilia’s body back up in to the Queen’s chambers. It’s quite entertaining watching them struggle to wipe away the stains left behind; they just don’t get how us commoners do it. They conclude that they have make it look like she jumped out of her own window. Lola seeks out the servant. She has to bribe the girl with money because she fears what could happen to Lola if the procedure goes badly. Francis is suspicious as to why Mary was asking questions about his guards. Mary tells him about Bash’s visit and he is instantly concerned that he was with her in her bedchambers. Mary assures him that she did not ask him to come and she was only asking questions to prove him wrong. Francis tells her that he could easily fabricate evidence to prove himself but he asks Mary to take him for his word. He does tell her that Bash is no longer safe from him though.
Catherine and Henry get to Cecilia’s chambers and work together to write her alleged suicide note. Down below her chambers Kenna has the archduke right in the palm of her hands. He seems like he is about to possibly propose when they witness the body falling to the ground. Of course, Kenna is more concerned about his sister’s bad timing than the fact that she is dead. In the morning Mary and Kenna go to fetch Lola but she is already gone. Kenna knows exactly where she went and tells Mary.
Elsewhere in the castle the archduke smells foul play because his sister could not write. Thankfully Catherine is quick on her feet. She fabricates an intricate story of how his sister committed suicide over her guilt that she was caught with a man in her chambers. According to the Queen her “lover” wrote the note to protect her dignity. Luckily for the King and Queen Olivia, in a possessed bout of craziness, stabbed a priest with his own crucifix so they have a “lover” to present to the archduke. Catherine tells him that she didn’t know he was a man of the cloth when she tortured him for information. Happy to avoid any more craziness the archduke asks Henry and Catherine to pretend that his sister accidentally drowned in the river.
It’s no surprise the servant girl was reluctant to send Lola because the place she ends up at is this sketchy little cottage filled with all sorts of metal instruments that definitely should not be put in your body. Mary calls upon Bash to help guide her through the blood wood so she can reach Lola before it is too late. Mary arrives in the knick of time and tries to comfort Lola. The overwhelming guilt Lola displays while speaking to Mary allows the pieces to click together in her mind. Mary realizes that Lola is carrying Francis’ baby. What a slap in the face that must have been for Mary, realizing Lola got pregnant on one night with Francis but she has been having many nights with him recently and still nothing. After Lola decides not to go through with it Mary tells Bash that he should leave court because there is nothing left for him. She asks him to hate her and not Francis.
In a teary eyed confrontation Mary asks Lola how she could have done this to her. Lola tells Mary that she and Francis never thought he would see Mary again because she was engaged to Bash. Mary retorts that Lola knew that she would have to see her again because she is one of her ladies, and that she knew she still loved Francis. Lola tells her that this situation doesn’t have to change anything for Mary if she keeps it a secret from Francis while she figures out what to do. Bash makes a stop back to the two hunters on his way to leave France. She asks him to at least stay the night and they share a kiss. Nostradamus asks Olivia if she remembers anything. She just ominously says that the darkness is coming and it will take their souls….Uh oh.
Reign returns next Thursday with an all-new episode.
