The second episode of Season 5 begins with the girls getting off of a bus in front of the Rosewood Police Department. The girls are trying to convince Ali to explain everything, truthfully, to the police before going to see her mother. Especially considering the fact that her mother was the one who buried “her”. Clearly none of them are aware that Ali’s mother got a dose of her own medicine and was buried!
Ali walks into the police department with the girls and tells Detective Holbrook that she didn’t disappear and that she was actually kidnapped. Did anyone else find it strange how Detective Holbrook began questioning Ali right in the middle of the precinct? I mean, there are interrogation rooms for a reason, sir! After he takes advantage of one of those handy rooms, Ali begins to contradict herself when explaining what supposedly happened to her while she was gone. She’s interrupted when her father walks into the room. The girls are clearly confused as to why Ali is constructing such an enormous lie to Detective Holbrook and they definitely don’t seem happy about being sucked into Ali World again. Ali definitely has a vivid imagination!
Spencer and Emily go to Spencer’s house, where Spencer’s mom, Veronica, is visibly upset about their having disappeared for several days with no word. She tells Spencer that her father is in Philadelphia after hearing that her car had been impounded. She also tells her that Melissa is back from London with an attitude and secrets.
Hannah’s mother, Ashley, is questioning her about Ali and what they’ve all been through, but Hannah is busy dodging the questions by asking some of her own…one of which was: ”Does this cheese melt?” Really, Hannah?! Of all of the questions in the world that you could use to dodge unwanted questions, this was your go-to?
Aria is in her room calling the hospital to check in on Fitz when her brother, Mike, walks in. She begins to contradict herself as well when he begins to question what happened to Fitz. She kicks him out of her room on the pretense of her needing sleep.
Back at Spencer’s house, Spencer seems fed up already with having to lie for Ali again, but Emily defends Ali…as usual. Emily comes up with all sorts of scenarios that might’ve led Ali to lie to Detective Holbrook, but Spencer just isn’t buying any of them. As they’re discussing this, they hear a car door close. Ladies and gentlemen, but mostly ladies, welcome back Jason to the show! Once we all get over the heart eyes and rose tinted glasses, we realize that Jason is cleaning out his car late at night instead of seeing how his sister is doing now that she’s back. Sketchy? It’s possible! The girls walk over to the car after Jason goes inside, and they see Ali appear in her window upstairs. She throws down a roll of toilet paper with her phone stuck inside so the girls can read the text message that she’d received: “The Truth will bury you in a New York minute.” – Unknown Number. It’s not signed by A, but I have a very strong feeling that we haven’t seen the last of the A team just yet!
In her room, Ali has a heart to heart with her father and asks if he’s heard from her mother. He tells her that he and Jason have been trying to reach her, but have been unsuccessful. I don’t know about anyone else, but Ali’s father is a lot more tolerable than Jessica De Laurentis! That woman gave me the creeps!
Aria begins to fall asleep, but she has visions of Shauna at the theater and of her playing a violin solo. This startles her and she becomes fully awake, except the violin melody that she envisioned Shauna playing hasn’t vanished. She walks over to her window, which is open for some reason, and she receives a phone call from Hannah. Hannah spills the beans about the text message that Ali received, even though Spencer and Emily wanted to keep Aria from going into a panic that A might not be gone. Aria closes her window and definitely seems to be a bit paranoid now.
Ali is lying in her bed when she hears a noise. She sits up, but then lies back down when she remembers that she’s home. As she’s lying on her side, still awake, she hears her bedroom door creak open and standing there is Jason. As gorgeous as Jason is, him standing there is rather creepy, don’t you think?
Ali’s father visits Ashley and asks her to look into Mrs. De Laurentis’ emails to see if they can find some sort of clue as to where she is. Her father doesn’t seem too enthralled with Jason and his drug riddled past, so he begs Ashley for her help. Hannah overhears the conversation, so when Ashley seems hesitant, Hannah gives her the push she needs to look into it.
Back at Ali’s house, she walks out to her front porch where she finds Jason. He tells her that there are news trucks down the street just waiting to catch a glimpse of her and that she needs to go back inside. She tells him that all she wants is to sit on her porch. She asks him why he hasn’t asked many questions about what happened to her, and he tells her that he figured she needed some space. She asks what her mother’s reaction was when she found out that Ali was still alive, and he just says that she was stunned. They’re interrupted when a car pulls up to their house. A woman with a dog tells Jason that she had an appointment with Mrs. De Laurentis because she wanted to adopt the dog, Pepe. Jason tells the woman, rudely, to put the dog back in the van, but Ali decides to keep it in order to save it from going back to the shelter.
Mike runs into Mona in town and asks if she’d heard about Ali being back. Mona plays along with Ali’s story and tells him that she ordered whistles for all of the girls in school and that she’s going to request that the principal allow all of the girls to have apps on their phones to keep them safe.
Emily is walking over to Ali’s house to give her back her phone when Spencer catches up to her. She gets the idea to check the garbage that Jason threw out the night prior, and finds a bag from a bakery in New York. Whaaaaaat? Jason was in New York when the girls were?
Aria is home listening to her iPod and searching online for any news of Shauna’s death at the theater. She doesn’t find anything right away, but she’s distracted when her music turns into a full-blown violin playlist.
Spencer and Emily are explaining what they think about Jason to Ali and she doesn’t seem all that surprised. Spencer tells her that they’re not happy about the lies that are brewing all over again.
Ashley is beginning to look through Mrs. De Laurentis’ emails when her phone rings. Hannah decides to take a peak. She finds an email that was never sent to an unspecified recipient. It says “I can’t protect you anymore.”
Spencer walks downstairs and finds Toby speaking to her mom. Apparently when Melissa came back to Rosewood, she told her parents that she’d seen Toby in London and that that’s why she decided to come back. However, according to Toby, he never had a chance to speak to Melissa at all. When he went to her place, he found Wren, but not Melissa. Toby tells Veronica that she can call Wren if she wants to, but she replies with “Oh please! I’d rather stick a knife in the toaster.” Classic!
Emily goes to the shed and finds Aria making it look like Ali had been there, since Ali’s story to Detective Holbrook stated that the girls hid her there to keep her safe. Aria is clearly distraught about what happened with Shauna.
As Spencer and Toby are clearly showing how much they missed each other, Jason is telling his ‘father’ that he has to drive to Philly to drop something off to a friend. Emily interrupts them and says that Ali asked if she could take Pepe for a walk since she isn’t allowed to leave her house just yet. Emily overhears their father insinuating that their mother is also in Philly.
Aria walks into her house and finds Mona with Mike on the couch. Mona plays the protective friend card, and Mike tells Aria that he’d borrowed her iPod again. She asks if the violin music was coming from his room the night prior and he says that he guesses it was, and apologizes. Mona tries to give Aria one of the whistles she requested for the girls at school, but Aria tells her that they know she was with Ali the night that she disappeared. Mona asks Aria how Mr. Fitz is doing and whether or not he’ll make a full recovery. Figurative shots fired, people!
Hannah is delivering the emails to Ali’s father and he invites Hannah and Emily to stay for dinner. Although Emily accepts at first, Hannah tells him that they can’t tonight. She tells Emily about the email to the unknown recipient as they get into the car when, suddenly, someone bangs on the window…Jason. She rolls down the window and he tells her that he saw what she delivered to his father. She tells him that his father asked her mother to look into something and he tells her that HIS mother didn’t. He tells them to stay out of places where they don’t belong. He drives away and when Emily tells Hannah to follow him, Hannah delivers the line of the night! “No YOU follow him! I have to change my underwear!” They follow him anyway though, but it makes you wonder how many times they filmed that scene without breaking character! They catch up to Jason and see him leaving a sketchy apartment building. They’re not sure which buzzer he pressed, and are interrupted by a stranger who tells them to go away.
Ali is at the cemetery visiting what was thought to be her final resting place. Mona appears behind her. Ali tells her that she can’t be the same person she was before and that she knows how much Mona hated her, but that they need each other. Mona tells her that the text she received was actually from her. She takes the flower out of Ali’s hands and tells her that she’s going to wish she stayed dead, and walks away.
Emily and Hannah are with Aria as she’s on a paranoid rant. The girls are convinced that Jason and his mother are working together. Spencer is at Ali’s house trying to sneak her over to meet with the girls. As she’s walking through the house, Jason is sitting in the dark and asks what she’s doing there. She insinuates that they think he might’ve done something and he seems insulted that they think he kidnapped his own sister. He thinks his father planted the theory in their heads. As Spencer asks Jason why he was in New York, they hear Pepe outside barking loudly. Emily, Hannah and Aria walk outside to see what he’s barking at and are startled to find a hand poking out of the ground. Spencer tries to prevent Jason from seeing his mother’s hand in the ground, but fails.
The episode ends with police running all over the backyard and putting Mrs. De Laurentis in a body bag. Ali seems to think everything that’s happening is her fault for having been gone so long.
Jason seemed pretty shocked to see his mother in the ground, so who buried her? Was it Shauna? Shauna wanted revenge on the girls, so why bury Mrs. D? Could it have been someone else? Melissa with all of her secrets? Or could it have been Mr. De Laurentis?
Stay tuned for possible answers when Pretty Little Liars returns on Tuesday, June 24 at 8/7c for episode 3!
