This week’s episode begins with Hannah showing off her new hair color to Aria. Aria is curious as to the sudden impulse to change her look and points out that Hannah will create a whole new Pinterest board before she changes her nail polish. Hannah opens a copy of The Scarlet Letter and finds Shauna’s name written on the front page. Aria is determined to find something in there and seems to be a bit obsessed with all things Shauna. Guilt is definitely playing a number on her! They put the book down and, as usual lately, Mona is standing there to hand out her weekly Mona-isms. She tells them to keep the book because Shauna won’t be needing it. Aria is instantly suspicious that Mona knows what happened at the theater.
Ali’s dad sees Ali going through a box of things that she’s planning on bringing to the Goodwill. She tells him that she wants to go back to school and will need some things. He tells her that maybe they could move away into the place he’d been living in. Ali begs him to stay and tells him that she can’t lose her friends too.
Spencer is talking with her mom and tries getting information out of her about what Melissa wanted to tell her. Her mom claims that the only thing Melissa is hiding is getting back together with Wren. Mrs. Hastings doesn’t want to discuss anything further.
Mona is having a secret discussion with Lucas, and isn’t happy that he’s trying to back out of their anti-Ali plan. He feels bad for Ali after what she’d been through. Mona tells him that Ali lied about what happened to her while she was gone and that she can prove it.
Emily is helping Sydney train with swimming and opens up to her a bit about how she’s been avoiding talking to her mom. She gets a phone call from Ali and declines it. As she walks out, she awkwardly bumps into Paige.
The girls are having lunch at a table outside of the school and all of the other students are staring at them. They look around and see Mona standing in the distance, staring as well. Aria thinks she knows something, and Spencer tells her that she needs to take a psychological selfie. All of the girls receive texts simultaneously and automatically tense up thinking it might be A, but it’s actually Alison.
The scene changes to Ali in her room texting Emily to return her call and almost signs it “-A” but quickly changes it to “-Alison”. Her dad walks in and tells her that he heard from Detective Holbrook and that they need to schedule her medical exam. They were able to postpone it because of her mother’s death, but she needs to have it done. He tells her to go out and buy any clothes she wants, and as he walks out Ali begins to cry.
Aria is in the computer lab at school and receives an IM from someone named TheatreGirl. She suspiciously opens the chat request and reads “If it was me, I could never forget. It would haunt me for the rest of my life.” Aria asks who it is and finds out that it’s just someone in her AP History class and that the message was actually about Ali. Aria looks up Shauna’s funeral and finds a video of a woman singing. She stares at the video and sees Shauna sit up inside the coffin and look over at her. Uh oh Aria…looks like you might need some help!
Hannah is sitting alone at the café and Lucas walks over to say hi. He questions her about Ali and whether or not she’ll be going back to Rosewood High. She gets a phone call from Ali, who tells her that she has to go have the medical exam tomorrow and doesn’t want to go alone. She convinces Hannah to join her.
Emily runs into Paige in the locker room as she’s waiting for Sydney. They actually have a nice encounter when Sydney finally shows up. Emily invites Paige to join them and Paige accepts.
Spencer recruited Andrew to help fix their backyard. She confides in him that she wonders if her mom is afraid more of what’s lurking outside of their house or of what’s inside it. He seems confused but she brushes it off and tries to change the subject. She goes over to grab the mulch and finds an animal. Andrew tells her not to get too close because sometimes they play dead, but the animal was lying in rat poison. Spencer finds it odd because they’ve never had a rat problem. He picks up the bucket and finds a receipt from the hardware store dated last week.
Emily, Sydney and Paige are sitting outside eating and having a pretty decent time. Paige looks over and sees Mona sitting there staring, as usual. Emily realizes that Paige’s attitude changes suddenly and tells Aria and Spencer about it. Aria tells Emily that she’s noticed that Emily is a little distant when it comes to Ali lately. Emily tells them that she thought things would go back to normal once Ali was back, but it isn’t like that. Aria asks her if she became obsessed with knowing everything she could about Nate after she killed him. She responds by saying that his mother sent her a package that she obsessed over and imagined what it was like for his mother to write the name of the person who took her son away from her.
Ali is at her appointment with Hannah. The doctor sees a scar on Ali’s thigh and questions her about how she was injured. She begins to lie about the whole thing and Hannah recognizes it right away.
Mrs. Hastings seems distraught and Spencer walks in on her staring off into the distance. She tries to talk to her mother again, and finds out that Mrs. De Laurentis told the Hastings that she believed Spencer was the one who hurt Ali and was going to tell the police. Mrs. Hastings wonders if Mr. Hastings had anything to do with it.
Ali gives Hannah a tape recorder and tells her to give it to the other girls and for them all to memorize her story. She wants them all to be on the same page in case other questions arise. Hannah asks Ali where the scar actually came from and she doesn’t really get a straight answer. Ali tells her that once you know something, you can’t un-know it.
Paige is putting something in her car and is startled by Mona. She tells her that they have nothing to talk about. Mona tells her that she needs to have someone convince Ali not to return to Rosewood High and that if she’s not with her, she’s against her. Paige asks her if she’s ever wondered when she became the one thing she’s afraid of.
Aria is back to obsessing over Shauna’s funeral video, and watches it over and over again. Ali is sitting alone in her house looking at anti-Alison websites and Spencer walks in and stops her. Ali tells Spencer that they received the toxicology report from her mother’s death and that she’d received the wrong pills, which stopped her heart. Spencer is almost relieved to hear that because she was beginning to think that her father used the arsenic to kill Mrs. De Laurentis.
Aria goes to visit Fitz so that she could talk to someone about her issues with Shauna’s death. He tells her that she needs to find a way to forgive herself. He leaves to grab some food and returns to find Aria speaking on the phone to someone at Shauna’s church trying to leave an anonymous donation to the cost of Shauna’s funeral. He tells her that when she found the book he was writing, he knew that she might never forgive him for it but that he had to learn to be ok with that. He sets up a game of Checkers to try and get her mind off of everything.
Paige goes to see Emily and tells her that if Ali comes back to school, Emily should keep her distance. Emily unsuccessfully tries to stop her from walking away and hears something in the bushes. She walks back inside her house.
Hannah is at the mall trying on clothes and receives a phone call from Spencer. Spencer tells her that she saw Ali and she never mentioned anything about the recording. Hannah tells her that she’s tired of being the messenger and that if she wants to yell at someone she should call Ali. She hangs up and then rips the tag off of one of the items she was trying on. She puts her clothes on over it and walks out.
Spencer is cleaning up in the kitchen after cooking Andrew dinner as a thank-you for helping with the backyard. As she’s drying a knife, she cuts the palm of her hand open. He rushes over to her, but she tells him she’s ok. She goes into the cabinet to get something for her hand and finds a medicine bottle with the same medication that Ali said stopped her mother’s heart.
After several games, Fitz tells Aria that he might have to call it a night. She asks if he’d mind if she stayed the night because her father and brother are out of town and she can’t face going to an empty home. She quickly changes her mind and leaves.
Ali and Emily are talking about her return to school, and Emily tells her that maybe her father was right. She doesn’t think it’s safe and tells Ali that maybe she’d be better off starting fresh somewhere. Ali seems hurt, but asks if she received the recording. Emily tells her that she did and that she’ll memorize it, but it’s the last time she lies for her.
Spencer tells Aria what her mother told her about Mrs. De Laurentis and her fears about Mr. Hastings. He walks in and Spencer tells him that Aria is spending the night with them. She asks where her mom is and he tells her that he dropped her off to spend a few nights at the spa. Spencer is suspicious and begins to question him. Aria goes upstairs and he tells Spencer not to call her mother. He continues telling her that the police came by and Mrs. Hastings snapped.
The episode ends with Ali looking at comments on the website about her; some positive, but mostly negative. The camera zooms in on her eyes and fades to black.
