Last week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars left off with Ali’s new dog, Pepe, discovering the body of Mrs. De Laurentis buried in the backyard.
This week’s episode begins with a grief stricken Ali preparing for her mother’s funeral. The girls are all gathered at the De Laurentis home, along with Jason and Mr. De Laurentis. Spencer tells the girls that Jason didn’t hurt his mother because she saw his face when they found her body. Ali emerges from her room in a surprisingly funeral-appropriate black dress, which seems to upset her father. The other girls realize that it’s the same dress Ali’s mom wore to her funeral. Spencer points out the irony of Ali wearing the dress her mother wore to bury Alison…for the second time.
The girls are back at Rosewood High School, and the principal is telling them to try and steer clear of drama and disruptions. Spencer tells Aria to speak to Fitz and make sure that he doesn’t tell anyone what really happened in New York, but Aria refuses. Emily and Hannah are insisting that Jason is the one who killed Mrs. De Laurentis. They think that he was the one who hit Allison the night she disappeared and that Mrs. D saw him. As a result, they believe that Mrs. D tried to cover it up in order to protect her other child and that he killed her after she tried sending the email saying that she couldn’t protect him anymore. Except, no one knows who that email was actually intended for because it said ‘Unspecified Recipient.’ Spencer keeps defending Jason and the girls think she’s only defending him because he’s her half brother. Emily asks Hannah to accompany her to Philadelphia to try and find out what’s in the house that Jason visited there in last week’s episode. Hannah tells her that she can’t because she has to take Ali to the funeral home.
Mona runs into Aria in the halls at school and asks her to sign a Get Well Soon card for Fitz. She tells Aria that Fitz is back in Rosewood, which shocks her. Hannah walks up and takes the card from Mona to sign it.
Emily drops her notebook as she’s walking down the stairs and Paige is there to pick it up. They have a quick discussion and Emily notices a girl standing in front of the trophy case staring at her. Paige tells her that she’ll take care of the girl because she just joined the swim team. Mona seems to just be running into every in this episode because she runs into Paige and tells her that she hasn’t signed Fitz’s card either. Paige just stares back at her…are we ever going to find out what happened in that anti-Ali meeting that Mona was holding?? Emily is at her locker and sees the same girl staring at her again. She goes over and tells her to get a good look so that they can get on with their lives. The girl tells her that she’d been looking at her swim trophies. Her name is Sydney Driscoll and she seems to be a little too interested in Emily and her swim skills. She asks Emily to watch her in the pool just once.
Spencer is in her room looking over at Ali’s house when Melissa creeps up behind her and tells her not to get caught. She asks Spencer why she sent Toby after her in London and that there’s no difference between not seeing him and knowing he was there. She tells Spencer to stay away from Ali and the rest of her family and Spencer reminds her that they’re both related to parts of Ali’s family (Jason).
Ali and Hannah are at the funeral home waiting for the director to give Ali the visitor log. Ali tells Hannah that she hates funeral homes because her mother used to drag her to all of her relatives funerals in order to understand the fragile nature of life. Ali sees a painting on the wall and seems to freak out a bit. She goes into the other room, and the director comes in and mistakes Hannah for Ali. When Ali returns she introduces herself and says that her and Hannah used to be much easier to tell apart. Hannah looks at her reflection in the mirror and goes into a flashback of her as “Hefty Hannah” talking with Mona. It’s around the time when Ali disappeared and Mona seems different. She tells Hannah that if Ali is really gone, someone needs to take her place
Spencer and her father are discussing what will happen once the police tape is removed from the backyard. He suggests selling the house and tells her that whether they stay or go, they’re done with the De Laurentis family. She tells him that Melissa thinks that Jason killed Mrs. D and that he needs to stop her from spreading the idea. He responds by telling Spencer that anything that gets the police to look somewhere other than their own house is best for everyone in their family. She tells him to forget selling the house and that they can just add a koi pond since someone already dug a hole. Mr. Hastings…I believe you just got burned!
Aria finally decides to go visit Fitz. She can’t seem to knock on the door, but when she goes to walk away, he opens the door and finds her. She asks him how he feels and if he’s heard about Mrs. D. He brings up Shauna and asks if she’s heard from her since they returned to Rosewood. He tells her that her and the other girls need to be careful. She goes to leave and he tells her that he had a new lock put on the door.
Hannah sees Mona sitting alone putting on lipstick and flashes back to Mona giving her a makeover. Hannah had lost some weight and was still getting used to her body. Mona tells her to try on a shirt that once belonged to Ali, and although Hannah is hesitant at first and doesn’t think it will fit, she tries it on and it’s perfect. Mona tells her that everything is better with a friend, and the flashback ends.
Aria tells Ali that Fitz won’t discuss anything that happened in New York and that he doesn’t know what really happened with Shauna. Aria gives Ali the copy of the book that Ezra was writing. She doesn’t seem to be too interested in speaking with Ali.
Emily and Hannah go back to Philadelphia and speak with the man who caught them there in last week’s episode. They find out that he’s a regular at the pizza place around the corner and that he’s a good tipper. When they mention this to him, they tell him that they’re looking for Jason in order to make amends about something. He asks if they were old drinking buddies, and the girls find out that this is where Jason went for rehab.
Spencer is at the De Laurentis house and has a talk with Jason. He tells her that his mother had too many secrets and that that’s what really killed her. She shows him the email that his mother didn’t have the chance to send. Although Spencer seems hell-bent on finding out who killed Mrs. D, Jason has adopted a saying from his meetings: “Do you want to be right? Or do you want to be happy?” He doesn’t seem too interested in finding out what really happened. Could this be a red flag? He ends the conversation by telling Spencer that she can’t trust their father.
Emily and Hannah discover that Jason can’t be the person that the email was intended for. Hannah flashes back to her and Mona walking through the hall of Rosewood High after Hannah’s makeover. In the present, she asks Emily what it was like for her to come out. She’s fascinated by the fact that Emily always knew who she was because Hannah doesn’t think she’s ever known who the true Hannah is.
Ali visits Fitz at his apartment and has his manuscript with her. She tells him that she was looking for something in it that would help keep her alive and that she hasn’t found it yet. He asks her if Aria knew she was coming to his apartment and tells Ali to tell her because honesty is all he has left.
Hannah sees Mona sitting alone in the café. She goes over to her and asks if she knew Ali was alive when she they went through glamour boot camp. Mona doesn’t admit to anything, but she tells Hannah that she helped her. Hannah tells her that she didn’t help her, she changed her and turned her into Ali.
Ali is walking home from Fitz’s apartment alone, of course, and runs into Mr. Hastings. He has a pretty strange conversation with her and asks if he can give her a ride home.
Paige makes another unsuccessful attempt to reconcile with Emily. Does anyone else feel bad for Paige? She seems to care so much about Emily and keeps getting pushed away!
Spencer is sitting on her couch when her father walks in with a bag of salted pretzels. She shows him the email from Mrs. D and he folds it up and places it on the countertop. Melissa walks in and tells her to leave their father alone. She snatches the email and rips it up. Melissa tells their father that maybe they should tell Spencer…he interrupts and says no. He tells Spencer to go up to her room and that she can’t lie about something she doesn’t know anything about.
Aria is back at Fitz’s house and confesses to him about Shauna. He asks her how he can help. The episode ends with Hannah at a salon getting her hair done. She says she needs a change. We see Mona standing behind a frosted glass in the salon and someone stands beside her. Who is it??
Hopefully we’ll get answers next Tuesday, July 1 at 8/7c!
