After the explosion in last week’s episode, the girls all received text messages simultaneously. The beginning of this week’s episode reveals the message:
“Did you miss me, bitches? – A”
As everyone is standing outside watching Toby’s house burn, they realize that he disappeared. Just when someone asks where he is, the house explodes again. Spencer finally speaks to Toby a while later and he’s in the hospital after breaking a leg trying to dodge a falling tree branch.
The girls are discussing their current A situation, which they all thought was over since Shauna is gone. As if the girls didn’t have enough problems, now they want to figure out why A has been gone and picked now to resurface.
Hannah is at the café and sees Caleb sitting alone at a table. He shows her a newspaper article that says a natural gas leak is what caused the explosion and that they’re not investigating it further. He suggests that the girls tell the police about A, and she tells him that she can’t and that things have changed.
Fitz and Aria are discussing Shauna and the return of A, and Fitz tells her that he’s trying to find a connection between Mrs. De Laurentis and Bethany Young (the girl who was buried in Ali’s backyard).
Spencer makes a quick trip to her house to pick up some books before school and is startled when she turns around and sees her father standing in her doorway. He says that Mrs. Hastings won’t return his phone calls and wants to know why her and Spencer are living at a hotel. Spencer tells him that they know he lied about where him and Melissa were the night that Mrs. D was killed. She also asks him what he’s going to do when the police find out that the pills that killed Mrs. D are sitting in his medicine cabinet. He denies having anything to do with her death and tells her that he’s been trying to protect Spencer, but that he would never kill someone to cover up something that she’d done. She tells him that she didn’t do anything and he claims that he didn’t either.
Aria spills the beans to Spencer about her and Fitz, and Spencer doesn’t seem very happy about it after what he did to her and the other girls. Emily, Ali and Hannah join them for lunch and Ali receives a text message. She shows the other girls and it’s a video of Mrs. D being buried. A message pops up on the screen that says, “I buried your mom the same way I watched her bury you. – A”. After the girls read the message, it automatically deletes itself from her phone.
The girls gather after school and Spencer is visibly upset after having accused her father of murder. Aria suggests that maybe he’s A, but Spencer doesn’t think that’s a possibility at this point. They all agree to help Ezra find a link between Bethany and A. Ali tells the girls that she has to leave town and that the only reason she came back to Rosewood is because she thought that A was dead. They tell her that she can’t run now because everyone knows she’s alive and she’d have nowhere to hide.
Spencer goes to Radley to meet with Eddie. He tells her that he’s not allowed to discuss Bethany with anyone. She pleads with him and reveals that someone very close to her is close to being framed for murder, but he still denies the ability to discuss anything related to the situation. He goes back to work and Spencer is left looking into a security camera.
Ali is staying at Hannah’s house when the doorbell rings. She tells Hannah to check first before she opens the door, but it’s just Travis. Hannah tells him it’s a nice surprise to see him, but he reminds her that they had plans for dinner that she blew off. He suggests that there’s something other than Ali that is making Hannah act different lately, possibly Caleb, but she assures him that they’re fine. She walks back inside and overhears Ali on the phone with someone trying to make plans to get away. Ali tells Hannah not to tell the girls or try to stop her. Surprisingly Hannah stops Ali and tells her that she’s going to help her.
Aria and Fitz are sorting through files and discussing their slip during last week’s episode and are on different pages. He believes it felt right and she thinks it was a mistake, but clearly both of them miss each other. As they’re talking, there’s a knock at the door. Fitz answers to find Lieutenant Tanner there to ask some questions. She hands him a large envelope that she says was sitting outside of his apartment and asks if she can come in. Aria sneaks into another room to avoid being discovered. Lieutenant Tanner tells Ezra that she’d like to discuss Shauna and how her body was discovered in his family’s theater. She doesn’t seem to think it was a coincidence, and Ezra doesn’t really do a very good job at not looking guilty! She mentions that he was shot the night before Shauna’s body was found and that she had gun residue on her. Fitz tells her that he has no other information aside from what he’s already told the police and asks her to call if she thinks he can help any further. As Lieutenant Tanner gets up to leave, she notices Aria’s belongings sitting on the table.
Emily tries to get the names of the other people in Mona’s anti-Ali group from Paige, but Paige doesn’t want to help after seeing the video on Mona’s phone.
Spencer is out with her mom and urges her to speak to Mr. Hastings. He walks in and Spencer tells her that she invited him to join them.
Hannah is getting some clothes together for Ali to take with her. Ali wants to see her dad before she leaves, so Hannah tells her that she’ll drop her off, get out some cash and pick her up when she’s ready.
Aria is rushing to get rid of all of the files at Ezra’s apartment. As they’re trying to figure out what to do with them, Ezra opens the envelope that Lieutenant Tanner gave him when she arrived. It’s a drawing of a monster screaming at Mrs. De Laurentis as she tends to her roses. He flips the drawing over and sees that it’s signed by Bethany. He tells Aria that he still has his security cameras up in the hallway and rushes to go check them.
Emily goes to Hannah’s house and tells her that Paige named some of the names of people who are working with Mona, and that Melissa and Lucas are two of them. She goes to tell Ali, but Hannah stops her and tells her to wait until the morning. Emily notices a train ticket on Hannah’s nightstand and questions her about it. Hannah lies and tells her that she was thinking of visiting her grandmother, but Emily points out that it’s the wrong direction. She looks inside the duffel bag on Hannah’s bed and figures out that Ali is trying to leave. They fight about what they think is best for Ali, but Hannah seems to want Ali to leave for personal reasons.
Paige goes to her locker after swim practice and a dead rat falls out.
Ali is alone at her house when she receives a phone call from her father. He tells her that he can’t make it home right away, so she sadly tells him that she’ll sleep at Hannah’s house. As she walks into the other room, a gloved hand reaches out and turns off the lamp.
Spencer is searching online for clues about Bethany Young.
Back at Ali’s house, she’s throwing all of her belongings into a bag. She turns off the light in her room and is walking through a dark house. Why? Why must she walk through the house at night in the dark when A is back? Come on, Ali!! She’s attacked by A and is thrown to the ground. A grabs the scarf around Ali’s neck and tries to strangle her. Emily rushes into the house and hits A several times with a book before getting shoved into a table. A escapes, of course, and Emily comforts Ali. Emily tells her that she’s not leaving Rosewood yet.
Hannah goes to visit Caleb. She tells him that Ali was going to leave and that she was going to help her and that she wasn’t helping her to keep her safe, she was helping her because she wants her gone. She tells him that she hopes he decides to stay.
Ezra and Aria are looking at the security footage and discovers Eddie, from Radley, dropping off the envelope. They wonder why he left it for Ezra instead of Spencer. Aria joins the other girls, minus Hannah, as they’re discussing what happened at Ali’s house. She tells them about the drawing the Ezra received at his apartment and shows it to Ali. Spencer thinks that Eddie left it for Ezra so that he’d know there’s something more to look into at Radley. Ali receives a text that says “See how easy it is for me to kill you? If you leave Rosewood, I will. – A”
After Spencer and Aria leave, Ali thanks Emily for saving her. She asks if she can stay at Emily’s house and promises that they’ll just sleep. Emily doesn’t sleep all night though.
Spencer meets with Mrs. Hastings at the café and finds out that they’re moving back into their house. She seems excited, but then Mrs. Hastings tells her that Mr. Hastings is moving out.
Hannah sees Travis sitting alone reading a book. She asks if he wants to have lunch with her, but he declines. He tells her that he likes her too much to keep meeting her halfway.
Over at Radley, Aria is being interviewed about a volunteer position. This is their idea for getting someone in to find more information about Bethany.
Ali and Emily are leaving Ali’s house when Lieutenant Tanner arrives. She asks if Ali’s father is home and tells her that she’d like for them to come to the station to answer some questions about Shauna. I’m pretty sure the Lieutenant can’t just show up at people’s doors questioning underage people about a case! As the Lieutenant leaves, Ali receives a text that says “Time for the caged bird to sing. – A”
The episode concludes with A writing ‘My deepest condolences. – A’ on a sympathy card and addressing it to the parents of Bethany Young. A covers themselves with a black lace veil and picks up a large bouquet of flowers.
So many stones unturned in this episode! Tune in next Tuesday, July 22 at 8/7c.
