This week on Once Upon a Time it was Paranormal Activity: Storybrooke Edition. Regina called upon her dead mother for answers, the Wicked Witch got one step closer to enacting her evil plan, and we found out why Cora gave up Zelena.
Zelena makes an unexpected visit to Regina’s house under the pretense she wants to give her some sisterly advice. The real reason is, she needed to make sure Regina was at home and not somewhere else because the Dark One was out finding her heart. Robin Hood and his Merry Men are protecting Regina’s heart upon threat of death from the Dark One when little Roland comes around the corner with some firewood. Without his free will, Rumple has no choice but to threaten Roland’s life. Robin surrenders Regina’s heart to Rumple to save his son. Regina makes it to Robin’s camp just after Rumple leaves and Robin apologizes to Regina for surrendering her heart. She tells him not to worry about it, that nothing is worth losing a child. Regina realizes that since she isn’t dead yet, the Witch must need her heart for something else, and she’s determined to figure out what it is.
Regina heads to Mr. Gold’s shop and is ransacking the place to try and find some answers. She asks Belle to help her, who not surprisingly based on their past is less than enthusiastic to help. Regina apologizes to Belle for everything and tells her that if she doesn’t help her she may never see Rumple again. Regina gets an idea and asks Belle where the candle that killed her mother is. Once she has it she summons Hook, Emma, and the Charmings to her house.
Regina tells the gang about a simple, but rarely performed ritual to contact the dead. The reason no one ever does it is because you need both the murder weapon and the murderer for it to work and with Snow present and the candle in Regina’s possession…they’ve got everything they need to give the Queen of Hearts a ring on the other side. When Cora isn’t feeling up to sharing her secrets the group calls it quits. Snow offers to stay behind to help Regina clean up. Regina tells her that she isn’t feeling up to a heart to heart to which Snow responds that it isn’t exactly possible right now…look’s like Snow does have a sense of humor.
Hook and Emma spend some time together at a closed down Granny’s. Emma is practicing magic tricks and she can sense that Hook is feeling down so she poofs him a cup of hot chocolate. When he doesn’t give her the excited reaction she was hoping for she poofs away his hook. He doesn’t take to well to that and tells her that it is bad form to mess with a man’s hook. Emma is confused why he is acting so strange and he tells her that it is too long of a story to tell right now. Before they can say any more Belle bursts in with some information. She knows what the Wicked Witch is planning to do.
Zelena has summoned her puppet Rumple to celebrate her victory. Now that she has heart, courage, and brains, she has almost everything she needs to achieve her master plan. Rumple figures out what Zelena is hoping to do, she is going to rewrite history so that she gets everything Regina has. Zelena dangles the option that Rumple could rewrite history with her so that he never abandoned his son. He pretends to be interested and tries to distract Zelena with a kiss, but in reality he is trying to steal back his dagger. Zelena isn’t so easily fooled and sends him back to his cage.
Back at Regina’s she and Snow have an intense heart to heart. Regina admits that the situation behind Cora’s death was complicated. They hear a clatter upstairs and they find that Cora’s ghost did make it through the portal. It seems that Cora is trying to attack Snow so Regina stands in her mother’s way. It’s so nice to see Regina be protective of Snow like that. Cora’s ghost manages to make its way to Snow and she hops into Snow’s body to give her the readers digest version of what Cora did to Zelena.
Here’s the rundown on Cora’s past. She was tricked by a castle gardener into thinking he was the prince. This faux prince proposed to Cora and they spent a night together. When Cora finds her Prince two months later she finds out that he was not a real prince at all. She tells him that she is pregnant and he runs away. The real prince, Leopold, finds Cora in the gardens. The two end up falling for each other even though he has been engaged to Princess Eva since she was born. The faux prince returns just before Cora’s wedding to sell his silence. Princess Eva overhears the conversation and spills the beans that Cora is pregnant. When the information Eva told him is confirmed to be true Leopold sends Cora away. Which leads her to return to her life as a miller’s daughter where she gives birth to Zelena then leaves her in the woods. Cora tells baby Zelena that if she needs to give herself her best chance at a better life….ouch.
After Cora vacates Snow’s body, Snow relays this shocking information to Regina and the rest of the group who have just shown up. Belle tells them that she can help them figure out one piece of the puzzle, Zelena wants to go back in time. Regina says that no one has ever succeeded in casting a time travel spell. They realize that it wouldn’t have been for Princess Eva Cora never would have given up Zelena, so Zelena wants to go back to get rid of Eva. This means that Snow will never have been born, neither will Emma, or Henry, and possibly Regina. Hook says that it is a good thing no one has ever succeeded, but Charming realizes that the baby is the key since Zelena made such an effort to get close to Snow and the baby.
Snow sticks around again to help Regina clean up from the mess Cora’s ghost left. Regina apologizes to Snow that she had to find out her mother wasn’t always who she thought she was. Snow lets Regina know that she realizes she was kind of a brat as a child. They both decide to look towards the future together. Snow tells her that Regina feels things with her whole soul and to not let anything hold her back. After all of this shocking news, Regina decides to take some of that sisterly advice Zelena offered up and decides to take a risk. She goes out to Robin’s camp and plants a passionate kiss on him. When they two break apart they share an intense stare before diving in for round two. Roll credits, and cue the fangirl squeals.
Next week Zelena makes a threat on Henry’s life, and we get to meet Glinda the Good Witch.
