I’ve just had the pleasure of watching the season 3 premiere of Nikita, ’3.0′.
This is a new Nikita, you don’t have to have seen the previous 2 seasons to start now. However if you have, you’ll probably enjoy it more than those just starting. Ryan is now in charge of Division, with everyone working for him to try to clean up the mess that Division started. Their first task is to clean up the ‘dirty 30′ – a group of 30 agents who didn’t come in when everyone was informed of Percy’s death, and are now working freelance.
Martin is the first of these to show himself, working to eliminate US operatives in China. Nikita and Michael are dispatched to deal with him, but run into trouble which ends in Michael being arrested. Ryan sends in ‘Wolf Team’ (Alex & Shaun), who help with Michael’s extraction, the saving of a CIA operative, and dealing with Martin (what a shot from Alex by the way). Along the way, there’s plenty of humor (as usual, the majority of it coming from Birkhoff), and also some disagreements (mainly down to Ryan – arguing with both Nikita and Birkhoff, and neither of them taking too kindly to it).
We had a hint that Amanda is still kicking around somewhere, with Martin revealing that she contacted everyone using a decrypted black box, so any of the last 29 agents could be working with her now. The episode ends with Ryan being informed by the President that if Division operates so openly again, she will ‘burn it down’, though to be honest we’d all like to see her try. The final note is much happier though, with Michael finally proposing to Nikita (after trying all episode), and her saying yes.
It was a great episode back, that helped set the stage for another great season. There are still plenty of questions to be answered though. What is Amanda up to? What happened between Birkhoff and Sonya that caused issues in their relationship? How will Birkhoff, Owen and Ryan react to Michael and Nikita’s engagement (given they all have some feelings towards her)? I look forward to all of these playing out in the coming episodes.
