The team that was Mel Gibson and Danny Glover have been reincarnated with the pairing of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson. I can’t wait for their meeting in the Marvel Universe, but I digress. I expected The Hitman’s Bodyguard to be a run of the mill, usual gaff, one trick pony movie, but was presently and thoroughly surprised as was the rest of the audience. There is a story line within the title storyline that unfolds as we get to know the characters of Michael Bryce ( Reynolds)a once illustrious protection expert and Darius Kincaid (Jackson), hitman, Bryce is way down on his luck until his former flame, Amelia, (Elodie Yung) who he blames for the demise of his career, calls him because she needs him to deliver Kincaid to The Hague. Kincaid is to testify against a war criminal, Vlad Dukhovich (Gary Oldman) and her team was just decimated trying to accomplish this because of a leak. Once Bryce finally accepts, the journey there is long, hysterically funny and full of guns, car chases and truths. Kincaid continually tries to break through Bryce’s ridged views of life, responsibility and love via flashbacks. The relationship between the two between the two develops slowly and is done in a way that the audience buys in to it completely. Kincaid’s wife is Sonia( Salma Hayek), locked in jail to make sure Kincaid testifies, is a comedic tour de force that fits effortlessly in this ensemble cast.
