Arrow #2.23 – Unthinkable
By Anna – May 14, 2014
The final conclusion of this season is coming to its climax. Oliver has tried so hard not to be the killer he once was but when someone close to him is taken by Slade will he do the “Unthinkable”.
We begin in the Clock Tower with the Arrow Team waiting for Roy to wake up after the Mirakuru cure was injected into him. Just when Slade’s soldiers infiltrate the Clock Tower, Roy awakens being cured. A great escape as they all zipline to the ground, Oliver taking Felicity in his arms. A helicopter appears and puts a rocket launcher into the Clock Tower killing the soldiers. Lyla Michaels (Audrey Marie Anderson) to the rescue.
There is chaos on the streets of Starling City. The Arrow Team arrived back at the Foundry where it has been compromised by Slade’s army. Oliver wants Lyla to go back to A.R.G.U.S to stop Amanda Waller (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) and to buy Oliver some time so he can stop Slade. Diggle is going with Lyla no matter what “to death do us part”. Felicity and Roy are going to fill injection arrows with the cure. So it ends tonight.
We last saw Thea shoot Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) but to our surprise he wore a kevlar proof vest. Merlyn was glad Thea pulled the trigger as his own son Tommy lacked the conviction whereas she had the strength to do it.
Quentin Lance rallies his police officers to go and fight Slade’s army. Sara doesn’t want Laurel apart of the fight and the next thing Laurel is darted in the neck.
Roy is trying to remember what happened to him. A surprise visit in the Foundry, Sara went for help and returned with Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) and 7 League of Assassins. I love when Nyssa introduces herself to Felicity and Felicity replies “MIT class of 09”. The price for Nyssa and the League of Assassins is for Sara to go back with her. Sara is still of the opinion that to fight the Unthinkable you have to do the Unthinkable. Oliver does not want to kill as they have the cure. Oliver goes to Roy it is time for him to remember his training, everything he has learnt and hands him a box with a red mask. We now have the Red Arrow. Oliver tells Roy “if you survive a crucible, you grow the stronger for it”; the mask is to remind him of that. Oliver wants it done his way and the League say they take no prisoners.
Merlyn is trying to protect Thea and she wants nothing to do with him. Roy calls Thea to meet her at his place. Merlyn says he will be there for her when she needs him.
At Queen Consolidated Arrow, Sara, Nyssa and the League of Assassins are taking down Slade’s army with the cure. Slade escapes out the window leaving Ravager (Summer Glau). Oliver will not let Sara kill her but Nyssa slits her throat.
Flashback to the Amazo where Slade has captured Sara and Oliver. Slade is hallucinating with Shado telling him its Oliver’s fault and to kill him. As Slade puts on the mask in readiness to shoot Oliver, Anatoli fires a torpedo into the Amazo.
At the police station Lance cannot stop one of Slade’s men from taking Laurel. He goes to Queen Consolidated and informs Sara and Oliver that Laurel was taken by a masked man. Felicity tracks the army by thermal imaging as they mass towards the tunnel. Oliver is going after Slade’s soldiers as the city comes first. Lance is not happy about that, he wants Laurel safe. Lance tells the Arrow he respects him that he doesn’t want to kill but Slade’s men are monsters and need to be destroyed and tells him to get back in the habit. Felicity believes Lance is wrong. Oliver agrees that he can’t defeat Slade with one hand tied behind his back and that he has to kill him. Felicity being the voice of his reasoning, tells him that he has a choice – Oliver needs to outthink Slade.
Thea meets Roy at his home. Roy apologies to Thea for what has happened, but he lies to her about the Arrow. He goes off to join the fight.
Oliver takes Felicity to the Mansion. He wants her to stay at the Mansion so she will be safe. Oliver tells her that Slade wants to kill the woman that he loves and he took the wrong woman. Oliver tells Felicity that he loves her and asks if she understands and then walks away. Slade is watching the happy moment.
Diggle and Lyla break into A.R.G.U.S. Waller cannot get a fix on Slade’s army as they are in the tunnel. Diggle and Lyla free the Suicide Squad prisoners including Lawton (Deadshot) (Michael Rowe).
The fight begins with Arrow, Roy, Sara, Nyssa and her League of Assassins men and Lance to shoot as many men with the cure and let it do its work.
We are then suddenly back on the Amazo with the freighter flooding from the torpedo explosion. Sara is sucked out.
While Thea is backing to leave with Roy she comes across a bow and arrows.
Waller is getting ready to prep the drone to fire when Diggle, Lyla and Deadshot intervene. Waller lets slip that Lyla is pregnant unbeknown to Diggle.
Slade contacts Oliver when Oliver tells him his army is broken and it is over. Oliver is done playing games with Slade but Slade is not and tells him that he has taken Felicity. Oliver goes to meet Slade. Slade has Laurel and Felicity and believes that Felicity is Oliver’s love. We learn that it is a ruse and Oliver could bait Slade when he knew that the Mansion was bugged. So he used Felicity as his “love” and slipped her a syringe of the cure during the declaration of his love to her. But the look on Oliver’s face to Felicity looked more than just a ruse for Slade and Felicity’s look was “what just happened”. Was it more to protect and save Laurel and risking the life of Felicity? He is totally relying on Felicity to inject Slade in the neck with the cure. Just when the masked man is going to slit Laurel’s throat Sara kills him and gets Felicity and Laurel to safety.
The fight begins between Oliver and Slade with flashbacks on the Amazo and then back to the present. On the Amazo Slade is trapped under some wreckage and instead of Oliver using the cure puts and arrow through his eye believing he kills him. The Amazo breaks up. Will Oliver be able to defeat Slade in the present? He manages to secure an Arrow line around him. Slade wants him to kill him to prove he is a murderer.
Oliver contacts Diggle to tell Waller it is over and to call back the drone.
At the docks Lance and Laurel say goodbye to Sara who is going back with Nyssa. Sara gives Laurel her leather jacket. Is she handing over the reins of The Canary? As Laurel and Lance leave the dock, Lance collapses from bleeding internally. He was obviously hurt at the police station when attacked by one of Slade’s men. Will he survive?
Roy goes back to his home to find a note left by Thea. The note says that Thea Queen was trusting and she doesn’t trust him or anyone anymore and that she was weak. She wants to be strong. She leaves with her father, Malcolm Merlyn.
We find Slade in a prison far away from civilisation in an A.R.G.U.S super max cell on the island. Slade tells him that he did not have the guts to kill him but Oliver had the strength not to kill. Oliver tells Slade that because of him he was able to make it home to see his family again – he helped him to become a hero. Oliver thanks Slade.
Diggle and Felicity wait for Oliver. It’s time now for Oliver to get his family’s company back – one problem he is poor and has to get a job. Oliver says “if they know anyone who is hiring an ex billionaire with superior archery skills”. Diggle leaves Oliver and Felicity to have a moment as she asks him that it is “Unthinkable” that he loves her and she had her fooled. I think she really thinks he meant it, Felicity was hoping. You can tell from the way Oliver looked at Felicity there is something there but it is not time to admit it yet. Oliver is flying off the island and Felicity is curious as to when Oliver learnt to fly if he spent 5 years on the island. We then flashback to him in a hotel room in Hong Kong where he meets Amanda Waller.
So questions to answer for next season will be how Oliver knows Amanda Waller, will Malcolm Merlyn train Thea, does Lance survive and Diggle and Lyla having a baby.
