Arrow #2.20 – Seeing Red
By Anna – April 23, 2014
Roy is out of control with the effects of the Mirakuru and Oliver must decide on a way to stop him before it is too late. Even Thea finds it difficult to get through to him. We also witness an unexpected tragic ending for the Queen family.
This was one of the best episodes of Arrow. We know the show focuses a lot on action and stunts but it certainly delivered with drama for our characters. When we thought we were focussing mainly on Roy, little did we know there would be a twist at the end of the episode for the Queen Family?
Roy is back at the Arrow Cave laying on the metal table unconscious with Diggle and Felicity watching over him with S.T.A.R.R Labs working on a cure for the Mirakuru. Felicity is trying to locate Isabel Roche who has gone missing for over a week. She is also a little freaked out wondering if that makes her a bad person with Roy twitching on the table. Roy is awake and destroys Felicity’s computers, Diggle gets tossed aside and he takes off upstairs to Verdant and disappears.
Oliver and Sara share a tender moment together and Oliver wants Sara to move in with him. They are interrupted by Felicity advising them of Roy’s rampage.
At the Queen Mansion, Moira (Susanna Thompson) is being interviewed on her views on becoming Mayor and her vision for the city and being a parent. Thea interrupts and advises Moira that she does not want her rally held at Verdant. Mark Francis advises her that she must decide on either the campaign or her children.
We flashback to 7 years ago with Oliver and Laurel on the couch and Oliver is moping around. He tells her that he was out with Tommy and is tired. Moira knows that something is wrong and that he was not out with Tommy and tells his mother that he screwed up and got a girl pregnant.
In the present day, Arrow and Black Canary go looking for Roy. Roy is on a rampage assaulting people in his travels. He comes across Sin but she notices the difference in him and knows about the Mirakuru and he even slaps her around.
Oliver and Sara are at Verdant. Thea doesn’t want to see Oliver and is not happy that Diggle is hanging around watching over her. It is for her own protection because Slade Wilson is still at large. Sin comes to see Thea but tells Sara that Roy hurt her.
Moira goes and visits Sebastian Blood (Kevin Alejandro) at his campaign headquarters to advise him that she is dropping out of the rally campaign due to her daughter and will announce it at the rally. Blood is happy that there is a dawn going to happen for Starling City.
Flashback to Oliver feeling like his life is over for getting a girl pregnant. Moira is there to console him and to help him through it. It’s a fitting speech Moira gives to Oliver that “we all make mistakes and hopes that he forgives her for any she makes in the future”.
Sin locates Roy who is at the Clock Tower. Arrow and Black Canary go after Roy but is no match for him. Oliver tries to get through to Roy by removing his mask and being Oliver saying he is a good person with a soul. It doesn’t work and Oliver is taken down and Roy stomps on his knee. Roy escapes and seriously injures one and kills another police officer. Arrow goes to the hospital to see about his injured knee. Luckily the doctor is grateful for the Arrow stopping thieves stealing the drugs and gives him a splint and pain killers.
Diggle lurks around Verdant protecting Thea. He has a heart to heart talk to her that family should mean a lot to her and that her mother loves Oliver and her and is consistent with that and she deserves another chance. A newsflash goes up regarding the attack on the police where Thea realises it was Roy. She meets with Sin who tells her all about the Mirakuru and Roy being shot up with it.
Back at the Arrow Cave, Oliver is dealing with getting his leg healed. Felicity is trying to locate Roy and Sara wants to have Roy killed as he is too far kind. Oliver doesn’t want to kill as he believes that Roy can be saved. Sara believes that 5 years ago they killed Slade with the Mirakuru and the same needs to be done with Roy. She picks up a gun and says “Mirakuru won’t stop a head shot”.
Roy is having hallucinations seeing Thea that it is all her fault and she should be punished and that he should hurt her permanently and should be killed.
At the rally Oliver learns that Moira is going to drop out of the race. Moira is concerned about his injury when Oliver confesses it is “yet” another motor cycle accident. She wants to repair her relationship with Thea and drop out of the race. He tells her that he knows what it is like sacrificing the people close to him for the good of the city and she should stay in the race to show Thea she can do something good for the city. She drops a bombshell and says “I know, I know” – she has known since last year the night of the Undertaking. She is so proud of her son. Oliver and Moira’s relationship has just taken a new direction. So Moira has known all along that her son is “Arrow”.
Another flashback where Moira meets the girl Oliver got pregnant. Moira had her investigated and gives her a cheque for a $1 million to look after her grandchild and so Oliver can also have a bright future. She is to tell Oliver that she lost the baby and on leaving for Central City and will be given another $1 million.
At the rally Moira planned to drop out of the campaign but seeing Thea enter the room she changes her mind and goes on to say that family is more important as well as the city. Sebastian Blood watches on and is not a happy person considering she told him she was dropping out of the race. Thea takes advantage of the media to say she is proud of her mum but she is, in fact, sending a message to Roy to lure him to Verdant.
Oliver goes down to the Arrow Cave to change as Arrow but is not doing so well with his leg and takes a large dose of Novocaine.
Roy arrives at Verdant shooting the place up. Diggle gets knocked out with a pole. Thea tries to talk to Roy to fight the Mirakuru but he starts to strangle her while lifting her off the ground. Sara wants to kill him and shoots him in the knee. He begs to be killed but Arrow arrives and shoots him with the Tibetan Pit snake venom and says “no one dies tonight”. They take Roy back to the Arrow Cave and keep him sedated. Oliver doesn’t want to give up on him yet but Sara wanted to kill him because it is who she is and she has lost her soul to darkness. Oliver wants to help her get it back but she believes Oliver deserves better and to be with someone who can harness the light that is still inside of him and she is not that person and never will be. She cares too much to be with him and so breaks up with him. Sin and Sara say goodbye. Sara is off to see an old friend. Could that be Nyssa Al Ghul?
Thea questions Oliver’s whereabouts but Moira defends him that he was with her. As the three of them drive home, Thea tells them that the mere fact they are trying to protect her with lies and secrets is actually hurting her. Moira wants to start afresh and begins to tell them about Malcolm Merlyn when an explosion goes through the car window. Could that be that he is the dark archer? Oliver is having flashbacks of seeing Shado lying dead. Slade has Moira and Thea tied up and now Oliver has to choose all over again – his mother or sister. Oliver begs Slade to kill him instead. Moira makes the ultimate sacrifice and stands up to Slade. Before she turns around to Slade she tells Oliver “there is only one way tonight can end”. Before Slade kills her, he tells her that “she possesses true courage”. Instead of shooting Moira, he puts a sword through her. Slade says there is still one more person to die before it is over.
Flashback to Oliver, where he is on the phone to the girl and she is telling him that she lost the baby and is going back to school in Central City. Oliver realises that he isn’t ready to be a dad but he is emotionally upset. He is glad to have his mother for support and both say “I love you”.
We end with Moira lying dead on the ground with Thea crying over her with Oliver lying beside her still tied up.
This has been a mind blowing episode.
Well done to Moira to sacrifice herself to save her children. She mended her relationship with her son and daughter.
What did Moira want to say about Malcolm Merlyn?
Will Roy get back to his old self?
What does Slade have next up his sleeve?
