Arrow #2.17 – Birds of Prey
By Anna: 26 March 2014
This episode is a girl kickass episode with Helena known as The Huntress (Jessica De Gouw) and the Black Canary (Caity Lotz) returning to Starling City when she learns that her father Frank Bertinelli (Jeffrey Nordling) has been arrested and put on trial. She still wants revenge for her father killing her finance, Michael.
We begin with the police together with Quentin Lance going after Hugo Manheim a racketeering criminal. The Arrow and Black Canary are watching over the showdown. We have some great action stunts by the team right at the beginning of this episode. Lance is shot but is okay. Arrow brings down Frank Bertinelli. So they now know there will be a new problem in town with Helena Bertinelli to arrive for revenge of Michael’s death.
Sara has no idea who Helena is? As Felicity calls her “Oliver’s psycho ex-girlfriend hell bent on revenge on her father”. In Helena’s free time she has been torturing and killing mafia to find out the whereabouts of her father.
We have our first flashback where we see Oliver being tortured by Slade Wilson on the freighter, Amazo. They cannot leave the area as the engine needs repairs.
Laurel attends her second AA meeting and starts to open up about her problems. She is finally getting her life back in order.
Adam Donner invites Laurel to his office and wants her to come back to work for the trial of Frank Bertinelli. Donner says that he had her name cleared at the bar. The only thing we learn later is that he had no right to bring her back and it was all part of a scheme for her to be a part of the rouse to capture Helena but little did he know that hostages would be taken.
At the lair the Arrow team meet where Felicity who has tracked down Helena. Roy is ready to go back out in the field. They follow a lead but it is a decoy. Roy is shot in the hand and starts to lose control. If it wasn’t for Oliver calling him “Speedy” to snap him out of his rage he could of killed. Roy thought Oliver was giving him this nickname and for the record does not want to be called Speedy.
Oliver asks Roy to break up with Thea as she is not safe around him with his rage. Roy knows this is the right thing to do but he is having a hard time trying to convince Thea to breakup, so the only way to do it is have her find him making out with one of the bartenders. Painful for both of them but it had to be done.
The Bertinelli trial starts earlier than planned. Sara learns that Laurel is handling the case and tries to persuade her against it.
Back on the island, Sara and the men who escape hold up at the plane. Slade contacts Sara advising her that he has Oliver and he is being tortured and is breathing for now. To get the Amazo engines working he wants to make a deal with Sara, Oliver for Hendrick.
Present day Sara is not happy that Oliver will not kill anymore and she will do whatever it takes even kill to stop Helena. Oliver wants Sara to stay out of it and he will handle the situation as he created the Huntress.
Felicity comments to Sara that she reckons if the Huntress shows up she should kickass in which Digg agrees.
At the courthouse Oliver turns up to watch the trial and tells Laurel he is there to see the prosecutor who is something special. Frank Bertinelli is brought into the courthouse via the front entrance as a trap for Helena. She becomes surrounded by the police but she has come prepared with her own men who take hostages. Laurel becomes one of those hostages. Oliver manages to get Bertinelli out of the courthouse.
Lance is unhappy that Laurel is hostage and calls the Arrow on his cell. Love this scene as Oliver is standing right next to Lance when the cell rings for the Arrow and he quickly makes a story up that it is his mother calling.
Felicity says it is getting harder to keep track of Oliver’s secret identity. Digg takes the Arrow clothes to Oliver. To Oliver’s dismay Sara goes out to rescue Laurel on her own.
Sara finds Laurel inside the courthouse who is ready to start drinking again but Sara stops her. Laurel doesn’t realise that the Black Canary is her sister. Laurel won’t leave as she wants to help the other hostages. Oliver is adamant that Sara is not to approach Helena. He doesn’t want her to kill Helena but she will do whatever it takes to save her family.
Back on the freighter, Slade is torturing Oliver by electrocution to convince Sara to hand over Hendrick.
To stop Helena making her first kill of a hostage the Black Canary sets one of her devices with a high pitch sound to distract Helena. Laurel attempts to get the hostages out. Canary and Helena have a kickass fight but Canary is thrown out of the window.
Helena needs her revenge with her father as once you let the darkness inside it never comes out.
The police tactical squad are going in with no exceptions even if the vigilantes get in the way. Helena escapes disguised as a police officer taking Laurel with her. Oliver agrees to an exchange, Bertinelli for Laurel. The tactical squad show up and Bertinelli is shot in the cross fire. Sara and Helena have a recap showdown and wants to kill her but Laurel convinces Sara not to do it. Helena is then arrested.
Oliver visits Helena in jail where she now realises that with her father dead it would never have changed the way she feels. So all that hatred was not worth it in the end.
On the island Oliver is being branded for his crimes. Slade tells Oliver that in Roman times criminals were branded for their crimes to remind them of what they have done. Slade wants Oliver to remember what he did to Shado. Shado had a tattoo on her back and so Slade is putting the same one on Oliver in memory for the rest of his life. So now we learn how the tattoo on his back came about.
Sara agrees to hand over Hendrick to Slade.
Adam Donner loses his job over the Bertinelli incident and Laurel blackmails the DA for her job back. Laurel is on the road to having her old life back.
At Verdant Thea is upset about her breakup with Roy. Oliver tries to consol her knowing it was him that instigated the breakup. Thea finds it hard that no-one wants to tell her the truth, Roy and Moira. She says that Ollie is the only one that doesn’t lie and keep secrets from her. It must have been hard for Oliver to keep a straight face knowing he is just as bad as the rest of the family in keeping secrets.
Thea leaves Verdant only to have Slade pull up on the kerbside to pick her up to take her home. Bad mistake what will Slade have in store for her?
