Oliver/Al Sah-Him is being transformed in readiness for his ascension as the next Heir to the Demon. He comes back to Starling City not as a friend but a villain.
My name was Oliver Queen and for three years I worked to save my city. But to save my sister I had to become someone else. I had to become something else.
So for the past three weeks Oliver has been training with Ra’s al Ghul for the transformation of Al Sah-Him to be the Heir to the Demon by starvation, sword training and brainwashing to believe that he is no longer Oliver Queen. Will Oliver lose his soul?
Ra’s puts Oliver to the test by bringing Diggle before Oliver so he can kill him. Oliver instead challenges Diggle to a duel and hands him a sword. Diggle tells Oliver that when he joined him with his crusade he promised him he would never give up on him and he never will. Oliver stabs Diggle through the heart. He passed the test but Oliver was under the influence of a hallucinogenic herb and didn’t actually kill Diggle.
A state of emergency has been declared in Hong Kong. The virus has been released and people are taking ill and dying. Oliver, Maseo and Tatsu have all taken the vaccine.
Ra’s takes Oliver to the ruins of Ra’s home village. Ra’s apparently didn’t end his challenger’s life, a man known as Damien Darhk who stole some of the water from the Lazarus Pit and escaped. He is now is the leader of H.I.V.E. Damien tried to purchase Merlyn’s earthquake device and also assassinated Andy Diggle. No doubt we will hear more of H.I.V.E in season 4? Ra’s advises Oliver that he must eliminate any threat to him becoming heir and that is Nyssa.
Nyssa is training Laurel to be able to fight on the streets. Laurel is hungry so they head to a diner which has the best black and white milkshake. Nyssa doesn’t understand why the country wants to fry everything when she is a normal person. For once in Nyssa’s life she has felt happiness away from being a killer of the League. Laurel tells Nyssa that Oliver has accepted Ra’s offer to be the next Heir to the Demon. Nyssa is not too happy as she was meant to be the heir.
Felicity and Thea are having dinner at Diggle and Lyla’s place discussing the night’s recon. Felicity says that if Diggle is going out each night he needs some type of identity concealment. Diggle does not want a costume. Thea is having trouble dealing with the fact that Oliver is gone. Diggle says that in the military “for a soldier that makes the ultimate sacrifice their gone but never forgotten”. They all toast to Oliver. They are all going through their own seven stages of grief.
The military are offering the Hong Kong people a vaccine to the virus but instead are actually injecting the virus to kill as many people as quickly as possible. Oliver starts shooting at the truck to warn the people away but the military retaliate. They are able to destroy the van holding the virus.
Nyssa explains to Laurel that Oliver will now come for her with as many League men to see her dead. The team now use Palmer Technologies as their base. Nyssa tells the team that Oliver is dead; his memory has been reprogrammed to be a killer. Felicity and Diggle do not believe that Oliver would allow this to happen as he only joined the League to keep them all safe and wouldn’t turn against them and give up his soul. Nyssa leaves to face her destiny. Laurel now defends Nyssa despite everything she has done in the past.
Laurel and Diggle are waiting for the showdown with Nyssa and Oliver, while Felicity keeps an eye on things back at their new base. Thea wants to join them and use some of her vigilante skills. Nyssa comes face to face with Al Sah-Him on the rooftops to face vengeance and asks for what offence in which Al Sah-Him responds vengeance is justice. Just has he is about to kill Nyssa, the Black Canary’s new sonic cry stops him. Nyssa is spared for now.
Back at the new base Diggle and Felicity are trying to come to terms with the changes in Oliver. Diggle has lost a brother he believed in and Oliver not knowing the true consequences of taking up the offer has lost his soul.
Thea asks Merlyn whether Oliver is back in town. Thea wants to bring Oliver back, she doesn’t want him to kill and wants Merlyn’s help.
Diggle heads home to find Sara left on her own and Lyla gone. Oliver has kidnapped Lyla in exchange for Nyssa. Diggle wants Nyssa handed over to the League.
Oliver waits at the warehouse where Felicity, Diggle, Black Canary and Nyssa meet for the exchange. Felicity tries to get through to Oliver that he is still inside. The exchange happens. Of course, the team were not going to let Nyssa go without a fight to be handed over to the League. Oliver fights Diggle and is in the same position as his dream to kill him. Diggle tells Oliver that no matter what you are still inside. Thea draws an arrow on Oliver to stop him and he walks off. Meanwhile, the League men have dragged Nyssa off.
The team now have to realise that Oliver is gone and he is not coming back after experiencing how vengeful he is.
Oliver brings Nyssa home to Nanda Parbat for execution. Nyssa has a vial which Ra’s wants. Nyssa declared to Ra’s that she is not afraid to leave this earth. As Oliver is about to kill Nyssa, Ra’s has a change of heart and says her spirit is broken and spilling her blood would only serve as gluttony. Instead, she will wed Oliver making her the Bride of the Demon. The vial on Nyssa’s possession is the alpha/omega virus. The final ascension to be the Heir is to erase one’s life. As Ra’s destroyed his home village, Oliver must destroy Starling City with the virus.
There are masses of people dead from the virus in Hong Kong. As Oliver, Maseo and Tatsu plan to leave the city, Akio shows signs of having the virus.
Felicity goes to visit Thea at the Loft. Thea is having a hard time believing what her brother has become and Felicity still loves him despite everything. Felicity says they have to go on living as it is what Ollie would have wanted so his sacrifice would not be in vein. Felicity also tells Thea that Roy is still alive and that they faked his death. She gives her the address of his location.
Can the team move on without Oliver? Oliver has been transformed showing no remorse for his actions and has lost his humanity. He fought so hard from coming back from the island, becoming the vigilante and then a hero only to become a villain. Can he be saved from becoming the Heir or is this all part of a plan as a ruse to destroy Ra’s? As in this episode Oliver says his name was Oliver Queen but in the season finale episode he is “Oliver Queen”.
